STALKER is actually one of the few FPS type games I've completed in recent years, so it must have had something going for it that grabbed my attention more than the likes of HL and Bioshock.

I hope it doesn't take them a further 7 years to develop this one. The older 5punkers will be in care homes by then.

Want.

STALKER is by far one of the most enjoyable games I've played. It was really really well put together I thought. Not many games get me so drawn in and engrossed.

I fear I may need a PC upgrade for this, tho. :-(

There's a cheaty savegame here if anyone can't be arsed to fill the prerequisites for the special ending. (I expect you'll need a weight hack)

I was going to say "like me", but that's clearly false as I could be arsed and made the savegame, but it was a bit of a ball-ache, even with cheats, although I guess it depends how far you'd got before reading the FAQ on how to unlock it.

I played it in three quite distinct phases - the first (pre-patch) getting stuck around the dump area, the second coming back and basically doing most of the game, the third redoing lots and doing the end bit. The second of these was by far the most enjoyable and hope it's this section of play that's replicated in the future release.

Has it been long enough that I can safely ask which the main endings are? When I did it...
Spoiler
I first did the monolith ending(s), then went downstairs and did the proper one (chat with the holo dude and either join/fuck off back outside). Is there another one I'm not aware of?

Nope, that's it. The endings are:
FAIL (Wish granters):
I want to be rich. (end game with 50,000RU or more, you get killed by roof collapse)
I want the zone to disappear. (end game with reputation above 1000, you get blinded)
I want to rule the world. (end game with Duty and Freedom leaders dead, you get synthesised into the wishgranter)
Mankind must be controlled. (end game with -1000 reputation or below, you get banished into some kind of nonspace)
I want immortality. (default wishgranter ending, you get turned into a statue)

WIN:
Join C-Consciousness (put in a vat, who knows if you succeed at saving the world or not)
Destroy C-Consciousness (extra teleporter level with lots of enemies, the end result being you destroying the vats and seemingly repairing the zone.)

Am I the only person who found the original painfully dull? I just couldnt be arsed with it all.

Maybe I was DOIN IT RONG. I shall give it one more chance.

it does take a long time before you get good guns, it gets a bit better after that.

i'm near the ending now, and am very pleased with my dragunov sniper rifle. although i never managed to find a really good assault rifle.

I found that at first too. Once you persevere past, I think, the second zone you get some better weapons and armour and can stand a chance of actually surviving a firefight.

I highly recommend the kit repair mod. It lets you repair your weapons and gear at a trader or barman for a fee, so I don't consider it a total cheat, but it does mean that when you finally acquire descent weapons and armour, they don't break on you 5 minutes later.

Once you get the SMG, you start to rock n roll. The SMG (Viper 5 I think it's called) is great for killing bandits, dogs, Fleshies, and boars. In a pinch you can use them on Bloodsuckers too if you don't have a shotgun or an assault rifle.

I ended up getting a hold on a G36 and using two of them for AGES.

I think I ran forward and around the map to the Freedom/Duty bases and nabbed one, I seem to remember having one before getting a hold of the L85.

I think I'll be reinstalling it on my home pc over Easter break, it'll actually run nicely on that dual core X1950XT machine, compared to the 2.8Ghz Althon XP X800GTO I originally played through most of it on.

The G36 is the second best assault rifle in the game, second to the F2000. Both of them do lots of damage and are accurate enough that you basically don't need to carry a sniper rifle for the really long range shots, just some patience and a few bullets. The F2000 + AP rounds will take down anyone fast.

I know, that's why I kept using it.

That and 5.56 ammo becomes plentiful after a while, I generally wondered into "new" mission areas with around 1000-1500 rounds for my primary weapon and a few hundred for something special.

The Deagle was rubbish in that game though.

Mostly this. :above:

I like using the special svd I found, it's optics offer double the zoom of the normal one.

The g36 sights are imo better than the f2000, I just wish the 36 took a grenade launcher.

it's a shame you can't put a PSO-1 scope on the Special VLA assault rifle, because that'd actually be about as good as the G36 in my opinion. With the SP-5 ammo it's a good gun. The only downsides compared to the guns that use the 5.56mm NATO are that the ammo is heavier, it moves in a more parabolic path (more bullet drop to compensate for), and the magazines hold 10 fewer bullets. I think they do a tiny bit more damage than the G36 though, it's just that the G36 is so much easier to aim and get headshots with.

That special one is awesome if you can find it. The problem is you're basically at the mercy of the game to give you the info about the stash it's in. I on;y found it once in the 4 times I've played through the game.
