I just found out that there is a command to stop this, so if you don't already know about it, here it is: type cl_downloadfilter "nosounds" into your autoexec and voila!

indeed. also has anybody noticed that the valve advertising sequence at the start of hl2 and any shit mod not good enough to make their own, can be skipped by pressing space bar, escape, and enter in ANY order. i felt right proud when i figured that out

*tests the space bar, esc, enter thing* Wow. I believe adding -novid to the launch options also gets rid of the video, but that's not as impressive.

This is so helpful, thanks.
But how do I actually use it?

Go here: \Steam\SteamApps\User Name\counter-strike source\cstrike\cfg and create a file in notepad with the cl_downloadfilter "nosounds" command and save it as autoexec.cfg
