Lost

Post by Lateralus »

OK, so we know that Heroes has most of us creaming our pants on a weekly basis, but there are a number of other shows out there that have kept me similarly entertained. Lost is something that I’ve persevered with, and it is now approaching the end of its third series. I recently discovered that the show will have a total of 6 series, and will finish in 2010. It’s something of a relief to know that it isn’t going to run perpetually.

Most of my mates have given up on this now, but despite going downhill midway through this series, the one I saw last night (number 20) was pretty damn good. I’m glad I’ve stuck it out because it seems to be getting more interesting again, which bodes well for the future.

To me, one of the most annoying things in the show has been the racial stereotyping that seems to occur so often. Black African guy becomes a tribal warrior at the first opportunity; Korean chap has leet martial arts skills; Arab ex-soldier tortures people. At least they’re consistent!

Other things just make me laugh out loud due to their absurdity and lack of any attempt at an explanation. Polar bears and monsters in the form of black smoke spring to mind. It’s usually made even funnier by the fact that someone, usually Hurley or Sawyer, makes some comment alluding to the absurdity of it.

I like the mix of the characters’ stories on the island and the stories from their previous lives which get interspersed throughout each episode, but it could definitely do with a bit more of a clear climax building towards the end of each series, such as an exploding radioactive man. There are 2 episodes left of this series, and there is no obvious climax, although it appears to be heading towards a showdown between Locke and Ben.

The final 3 series will be 16 episodes each, running from Feb to May each year, without an annoying break. I have a feeling that I’ll probably be watching them.

Lost gets worse with every episode.

But I keep watching because I thoroughly enjoy seeing them manage to out do themselves in terms of utter shit with each episode.

Well yes, that one aspect of the episode apart, I quite enjoyed it. I think a large part of why I keep watching it is that once I've got so far into a series - be it books or TV - then I have to see it through.

I almost gave up on Lost this series, but having kept it on Series link on Sky+ meant i caught up about 4 or 5 episodes in one go a few weeks back, and I'm hooked again. Not like I was, but I still want to see what happens. The episodes are getting more and more absurd but I like the fact I can laugh at it too.
But equally, it just ain't Heroes.

Lost at it's best still doesn't rival Heroes at it's most mediocre, but I'll probably watch at least the first couple of episodes of the new series anyway. I'm curious as to where they're going to head with this.

I torrented all of series 3 as it aired in the US and thought it had become increasingly absurd, however I am still interested enough to watch series 4.

The only series I've stopped watching so far was this seasons Prison Break, what a huge pile of crap :bored:

I've only seen S1 of Lost and enjoyed it thoroughly. The complete lack of explanation I find to be the main draw. The moment when the lottery winner finds his winning number on the side of the hatch was special. The polar bear was most whin also.

I can see how the lack of explanation would wear thin though. In the meantime, I'll definitely be giving S2 a spin

Season 1 is the only good season of Lost imo.

:above: Kinda. I watched it and enjoyed it, but by the end of it I was forcing myself to watch the season finale cliffhanger, which was mediocre in my eyes. I haven't bothered with any more.
