If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

motherboards

Post by jeffclaw »

Hey

i've finally coaxed my parents into buying me a new motherboard, graphic card, processor and psu ... nearly a whole pc ... anyway i was wondering if you could recommend some motehrboards to me which can support an AMD 64 and also have a 4-pin connecter for a nvidia 6800.

Preferbally the lowest price possible but not comprimising on FSB (some AMD's have 2.0GHz FSB right?)

thanks.

I cant help advise which hardware to get but I thought I'd point out that the 4-pin connectors would be provided with the PSU, the same connectors you use to power your disks, etc. I have a nvidia 6800 myself. You just need to make sure you have a powerful enough PSU, mine is 400 watts and works fine.

yup what he said. with the motherboard the biggest compatability issue you have is if the CPU will fit inside of it. and maybe things like AGP or pci express or somthing. to be honest im a bit of a noob myself though

OK done some searching an i have found

PSU

Motherboard

Processor

I am using a PNY Verto GeForce 6800 128MB AGP graphic card, it requires a 4-pin power dongle or something like that, would all of these be compatible with each other?

If it's like the 6800 I encountered the other day, it'll be a standard molex connector like the ones that deliver power to CD/DVD drives and HDs. In that case, the answer is yes.

I'd strongly suggest DO NOT BUY A USED POWER SUPPLY! that is asking for trouble. You should buy a quality one from a company like Antec, Enermax, or PC Power & Cooling.

also, I'd suggest a motherboard based on the nForce 4 chipset.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure there aren't any. I forgot about that. In that case the one you pointed out earlier should be OK or you could get a nForce 3 250gb based board such as:
