Xbox 360 HDDVD issue or my latest help me i'm a noob post

Ok i've posted this in a few other places and no help yet so i thought i'd send it 5punk's way as ypu guys are always so lovely and helpful

Basically I am having trouble with the Xbox 360 HDDVD player. When I first bought it and set it up when i chose play HDDVD from the dashboard i would just get the xbox 360 logo and the screen would flash white black and green in such a horrific way it would likely induce a seizure in an epileptic.

I jiggled the cable around and in the end got it working.

I have since watched a number of HDDVDs on it without problems (i won't tell you which cos you'll probably mock me)

However i received my free HDDVDs from the promotion this week and decided to watch one of them today, but i get the same flashing screen probleml. I THINK it may have something to do with the dashbaord update this week but i dont know.

Things i have tried to solve it so far:

Disconnecting from xbox live (actually removing the ethernet cable), don't know why this would work but someone recommended trying it.

Removing the temp files from the player in the memory options on the 360

Done the hard drive maintenance trickto get rid of updates (memory screen, press y then xx lb rb xx)

and of course checked al the connections

I would be really grateful if anyone has any suggestions or has heard of this problem before and knows of a solution, or even the cause

Hmm, I take it the telly supports the hd properly? The player isn't making a 1080i try 1080p is it?

I'm not too up to speed on the hd peripheral. Nothing like refresh rate, resolution, letterbox mode etc forcing the tv to throw a spack?

Take it everything is set to hd mode, seem to recall the cable having a standard and hd switch on the back. Is it hdmi or component?

Is the problem back with all the hd-dvds, or just that particular freebie? Is the hd unit getting too hot?

also, will the hdddvdvd thingy let you play normal dvds? if so, try sticking one in there, it might not try to fuck about and upscale it (so it might indicate if there's a hardware issue with the hddvdvhdvd thing, or it just doesn't like your telly.

thanks for the quick response as always.

the tele is 1080i and i did have it working before, I've watched transformers, 2 harry otters and a few episodes of heroes on it. not used it for a while and tried to watch the prestige today and got the problem. ried harry potter and the order of the phoenix again and that won't work now either.

i haven't changed any settings, the xbox is set up to do 1080i with the other setting thats in there on medium (can't remember what it is, but its the same as its always been)

switch is on HDMI, well i assume so anyway cos i haven't changed it

haven't tried a normal DVD yet, will try that tomorrow. last time it didn't like normal ones either, but i don't think its the same problem as fiddling with the cable fixed it before

Nothing wrong with Harry Potter. As I have yet to enter the revolution that is HDTV, I have little to offer, other than if jiggling the cable was your route to success last time, maybe the cable is dodgy, or the connectors on the back of either the TV or console. Worth checking said cable's proximity to power cables and PSU blocks, too.

I've tried a different cable and that didn't work. don't think its the connectors between console and tv cos it still loads up the dashboard fine.

its not especially close to the power cable either

I also don't know a lot about HD or XBoxes, but I do know a bit about fault finding. Is it possible to try your XBox on somebody else's telly? That way you'd know which bit of your setup is having the spack. It sounds more likely that it's the console, but at least you'd be eliminating a factor.

unfortunately i don't know anyone else with an HDTV, but the console itself works fine, its only when i try to use the HDDVD add on that it spacks.

i will try using the composite cable instead of the HDMI but don't know if that will help

i think i will have to resign myself to sitting on the phone to tech support

hmm, it seems to work on component, but its a bit pointless having an hddvd player and watching hd movies in sd. and i couldnt use it for games on the composite, it looks awul

oh ffs this is stupid. it has now decided to work on hdmi.

what i did was take the hdmi cable out from the xbox and tv and try the composite cable. it told me it wouldn't play an hd movie at 60hz, so i changed it to 50 and it worked.

then took the composite out and put the hdmi back. decided to try it on 720 and it worked. then put it back to 1080i 60hz and its working.

i fucking hate technology

yea i dont really use that name anymore. i just did while i was at uni really. never actually really been a major emo fan, although i do like a little jimmy eat world, fall out boy and panic at the disco. not into my chemical romance or bullet for my valentine or anything like that though

Have you tried googling your telly model number and looking through the specs to see if it's a known problem in conjunction with hd? You probably have, but I thought I'd ask. The refresh rate matters little on an lcd tv, the higher the hd the better, so 1080p>1080i>720p if possible, in whatever flavour hz it can do it. Just out of interest, what tv is it, make/model number?

its a cheap bush one i got for £250 in sainsburys, get what you pay for i guess. its working now though so shouldn't complain too much

Pffft, not this. 720p is definitely preferable to 1080i.

Well, if you're not dealing with much motion, 1080i can actually be better than 720p, but for lots of movement there is no question.
