If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

i gave up eventually.

logic being, gentoo takes 3-4 days to install, and works pretty well.

windows takes 25 minutes and it works just as well.

If you need a little box to sit there and encode/decode or work out the human genome, then gentoo is a sturdy little OS that's entirely customised for your platform, thus it's fucking quick. But as a desktop OS, it's rubbish because of all the fuss and bother you've got to go through to compile every* damn application you want to install.

*you can use binaries, but then you eliminate the point of using Gentoo, and might as well use Debian.

problem with gentoo is that you have to compile the genome first, then compile scientists to work it out.

it takes long enough to compile gnome, sticking an extra vowel in certainly can't help matters
