Stealth geeks

Post by Stuk »

I recently found this: http://www.swcp.com/~diamond/sg-faq.html. Its about those people who are geeks, but don't actually look like geeks.
...although they're a geek inside, no one will say, "What a geek!" about them based on an initial encounter.
When I read it I reconised alot of things in myself, getting contact lenses especially. Anyone else find bit of themselves or others in there?

Stuk (I seem to be on a bit of a post fest tonight)

The true stealth geek would wear the plastic glasses-nose-moustache disguise.

I didn't read the link, but I think my gaudy clothing obscures any sort of stealthiness I had. It's like wearing neon yellow, orange and purple cammoflauge.. while on fire.

They can't distinguish in conversation with the opposite sex between polite interest and desire, and tend to err on the wrong side.
its like they're psychic or something!

I first though 'hey, that's me', then remembered my favourite B3ta T-shirt and the fact all my workmates call me the biggest geek they know. And they work in IT.

I'm not so stealthy.

Hmmmm....not sure if im a stealth geek. Maybe. Maybe not.

Im not obviously a geek to look at. I do have a slightly odd fashion sense, with a fondness for hawaiian shirts and, yes, a Dr who scarf. But the general reaction is "are you on drugs?" not "hey, your a geek!"

I do rant about comics and computer games in public though. and my keyring has many keys, a swiss army knife *and* a memory stick thingy on it.

amblin wrote:Maybe we all subconsciously leave little clues for other stealth geeks... Like computer (read b3ta) t-shirts or excessive numbers of keys or even things like penknives and memory sticks on display!

We unknowingly crave other stealth geeks to chat to in pubs! Especially those rare female stealth geeks 8)
Ah, the amount of times I've met a fellow geek somewhere unexpectedly and a previously mundane conversation bursts into the delightful nostalgia of ancient computer games, Star Wars and tabletop roleplaying games. Maybe in my case I'm not a stealth geek, but a geek just hanging on to his last precious shreds of geekdom. Thank god for online gaming then.

Conversely there's always the uncomfortable feeling of being out-geeked and trapped in a (one-way) conversation about Star Trek or Warhammer.
