ISPs

Post by Dog Pants »

Right, in anticipation of BT cocking my broadband when I move house, does anyone have any suggestions which ISP (are they still called ISPs? I'm not down with the kids any more) I should move to?

Also, a 5punk search plugin for Firefox would be ace if anyone was clever enough to do it, I know there's one for B3ta.....

There is? I'd love to download that

oh, and probably if you can't get BT in your area, get Blue Yonder, they rule. If you can't, then run. To the hills. Run. For your life.

Or check out people like Tiscalli or NTL.

Plusnet are my choice, they offer speeds up to 2MB for £21.99 a month, have no usage caps and run a contention of 30:1. You also get a fixed IP and a half decent domain.

They're cocking well great.

If you go with them, gimme a shout before you sign up as they offer a discount on your subscription if you refer someone ;)

You could try these, but the price goes up a lot after the first year (but you can always cancel)

ive heard bad things about bulldog.

And so far ive yet to meet anyone who has had a trouble free time with tiscali. They are, in my opinion, all of teh cock.

Oh, and if your tempted by ukonline's 8meg thingy, check availability with them BY PHONE! otherwise the fuckers take your money, and then sit there with it without telling you you've got to wait almost 2 months to get it :x

I'm on Plusnet also and they've not let me down ... apart from when I asked to upgrade to 2MB and they said the line quality wasn't good enough but that's BTs fault. :(

So what's that Homechoice really like mrbobbins? Any problems or really good stuff?

Homechoice is indeed London only, although I believe they plan on expanding

They provide all the services down the phone line into a nice little box which is the TV set top box and modem all in one, like a small freeview box with an ethernet port at the back, bit of a disadvantage cos it's in the lounge and my PC in in the bedroom but I connected mine to a wireless router, voila!.

They have the normal TV channels plus a few like paramount and discovery, and movie/music sports packages etc. but the best thing is the TV on demand channel, they have about 20 to 30 tv series on their server and you can view them at will, like a PVR I guess cos you can pause rewind etc. at the moment they have stuff like X-Files, Buffy, Black Books, Futurama, dukes of hazzard, airwolf, they put new stuff on all the time (and take away old stuff..)

Never had major probs with the service, the box went down for a day cos they were doing some emergency server work but that's it, you can get up to 4mb internet I think but it doesn't affect the TV or phone side of things, they don't have loads of customers so the contention is low, I reckon they have about 8mb bandwith to play with to provide all the services.

Basically it's cocking great :boogie:

I got screwed (sort of) by BT as predicted; they can't get my new connection in until the 27th (four weeks after I told them I was moving). Unfortunately I wouldn't get it back quicker with anyone else because it's still BT who upgrade your line at the exchange. In fact they were saying I couldn't get online until september, until I told them I'd change providers if they didn't pull their finger out. So I suppose if I had changed the line would have taken longer. Bah.

So you'll be without the pleasure of handing me my ass in CODUO for a few more weeks yet. Thank god I have 'tintercock at work.

Oh, and the search thing uses glassco.cx for b3ta, so there must be a way of doing it with 5punk search. Can't find where I got the B3ta one though.

I had a bit of a look at the search plugin and wrote a little code that brought up the search page, but I think it works by inserting the URL of the search page along with the search operators. The 5punk search doesn't seem to work like this though, and as I'm not a web coder I'm at a bit of a loss. I just got templates off a few sites really.

Code: Select all

 <search
      name="5punk"
      description="5punk.co.uk - The gaming equivalent of a kickaround in the park"
      action="http://www.5punk.co.uk/phpbb/search.php"
      searchform="http://www.5punk.co.uk/phpbb/search.php"
      method="GET" >
   <input name="mode" value="Mozilla-search">
   <input name="result" user="">
   </search>
You save this as a .src along with a 16x16 .jpg or .png of the same name in the 'searchplugins' folder and voila!

It's the 'input name' bits that need the work, if it will ever work. Any suggestions Woo / Stoat?
