load times between maps are annoying me.

Post by Mr. Johnson »

as i probably have mentioned on teamspack before, i seem to get rather long load times when the map changes. i'm not talking about the load time everybody gets, but it seems to take a pretty long time for my maps to load, hence why i always join a bit later, and all the place on the red team is already taken. (or probably the reason why i got kicked last night) is this due to connection speeds, or do i simply need to disable something for this to end? cheers.

probably just slow machine.

the reason you were getting kicked was just the server being shit about reserved slots

Reserved slots did for me a couple of times on loading, and the server seems to take aa long while to load the maps. However, once the server has decided what it's doing, I'm finding that they load ok at my end. Quite often lose the randoms (therefore the blue team :) ) between maps cos they think it's crashed.

Have you tried defragging? Often helps load times I find.

the load times seem to be mostly on hydro, will have a look at it today.

edit: just had a look, seems it's missing (or thinks it's missing) some files, doesn't seem to be critical, but makes a fuss about it.

The map load times are very long for me as well, significantly longer than other Steam games but not too annoying. I can hear people joining teams, etc and a minute later I'm in as well. My machine is not slow and I've defraged recently.

I'm not too bothered, just backing-up Mr J.

may I suggest trying turning your graphics settings waaaaaay down?

just for the sake of testing, lower graphics may = significantly faster loading.

Loading takes ages compared to other games, but I still manage to be amongst the first 5 to load a map.

I'm trying to pin the server map issues down :x

I think it's failing to find some textures it wants, and failing.

so I'm uploading textures from my steam, all 1gb of them. :(

I'm in the game quite quickly, one of the first few really, even though my rig is a steam powered cupcake card. It sits and does nothing and then suddenly loads nearly all the map.

It seems to forget what it's doing and then it suddenly wakes up full speed.

:above: I think all the people who load fast are on 8800s, (and quite a varied selection of cpus, so it's not likely that)

As I was reading the post above, I did have a thought stream that consisted of, hmm, tell berk you reckon it might be the thing with the textures is all you know, er, thinged, and he might want to go and re jig the other ones because that should help. I actually thought in pretty much those words, so I thought I'd share them, I don't really know why.

Oh berk, you've been naughty editing again haven't you. You know full well you double posted and I pointed it out in an unoriginal yet hilarious manner.

Nah, we can't blame the 8800 cupcake club this time. I happen to load fairly quickly with this slap up system I'm using here:

AthlonXP 64 4200 dual core
1 gig of some decent ram which I think is OCZ (would look, but cba)
and an x800 XT

Plus a 3ish gig swap file.

And not alot of shit running in the back ground.

that machine doesn't count, i suspect SM2.0 might make for much faster loading than sm3.0 on a slowish card.

Yeah the load times for me are rather short, almost always under a minute.

tried that, didn't work. but actually, it doesn't matter all that much now that we all agreed to balance teams a bit more.

It also loaded quick on my home machine, my Opteron 4.4 X2, 2 gig of decent titanium OCZ iirc, x1950xt based system.

If it was just disk throughput (which is probably the bottleneck for loading textures into the gfx card), my twin raptors should see me among the first on the map every time - while this was the case during the beta, there seem to be a few periods of disk inactivity when loading maps now and I tend to arrive fifth or sixth. I'm guessing this is because of some sort of network traffic, to determine I haven't got a hacked map, as that's the slowest part of my setup - but it's not horribly long by any means, just a bit slower than it used to be.
