make me a computer, ladies.

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Yas, and after I removed the heatsink from the motherboard and CPU, it seems that the compound has gone onto the CPU.

Cheers Berk!

does it have a slice (or few stripes) of grey crap on it?

If so, that's heatsink goo and you don't need heatsink goo.

(in short: probably ignore the manual on that point)
:above: this. Most of the time, the heatsinks that come with retail CPUs already have some thermal compound on them, so you shouldn't have to worry about it.

:x My motherboard isn't detecting my IDE drives for some reason.

It did detect my DVD drive -once-, then nothing. Tried using different IDE and power cables, different BIOS settings, all different drives - bugger all.

Any suggestions dudes? I'm tempted to ring tech support but I thought I'd ask on here anyway.

(I ordered the Gigabyte motherboard that Stoat suggested rather then the ASUS. I imagine this is gonna byte me on the ass.)

Yup, worked perfectly.

The devices seem to be on if I don't have the IDE cable in them, and only using the power cable. However, once i insert the IDE cable, it turns off.

I'll assume you're getting the cables in the right way etc.

Most likely a weird death has happened I think.

Yeah cables are the right way. The really weird thing is that it picked up one of my disk drives a couple of times, but I tried changing the cable with the one they supplied and then it wouldn't pick it, then I tried it with the original cable which it worked with before - wouldn't register it again :x

Really don't want to RMA really but blargh. I'll try and catch tech support tomorrow and if nothing works, RMA it is :(

You put it in a plastic tub and lobbed it in the freezer for 30 minutes yet?

Fab taught me that, and so far it's saved two hard drives.

Drive apparently works still. not something i'd like to do unless it's life and death.

lolz naw, I'm fairly sure it's a motherboard problem rather then a HDD problem as the optical drives aren't working either.
