i can't remember the name, but it was about some kids finding this large spherical object on a dump site with a clown on it, and turning it into a spaceship. it's been over 10 years since i saw it, so it's really really vague.

Nah its not, the picture therre is Flight of the Navigator. I can't remember what the name of the film is we are talking about though, I remember getting the video of it though one christmas back in the early 90's.

Honestly, this film is a cheese classic, like the neverending story and the goonies.
