New RAM
Right guys, I've upgraded my old 512mb 2100 ram to 1gb 3200 (Ta ProfHawking
). I still have the same Athlon XP 2200 running at 1818Mhz, is there anything I should alter to make it all work better? So far all I've done is boot up and load Firefox, and its not been noticably quicker yet, but I'm not even sure if it should. I'm hoping that my games will be prettier tho! Anything to make my computer run harmoniously and broaden my knowledge of how to make it do so would be lovely.

well you could overclock somthing, but im guessing you buyed your pc as a package and thats why you didnt go 2700? if so you probably cant. just make sure your pc isnt overheating, one or two fans should do it, and one on the old heatsink if there isnt already. also if you have added alot of your own stuff, namely PSU, get some cable ties and make sure everything is tidy, a good air flow through your pc can speed it up alot i found. you could run some spyware finding stuffs n that, that always speeds the lot up. think theres a sticky someplace with a load of that here. also buy some neon lights, not sure about pc's but it makes nova's faster
also what the kittin said, its a pretty slow cpu and will hinder your ram a bit. its kind of like putting a turbo into a mini metro. it will go quicker than any metro, but its still a bag of shite
/after reading his post again he well may be right, and no possitve increase will happen. im quite the noob when it comes to hardware so i wouldnt know

Other specs are:
Radeon 9550 128MB
AS Rock K7S41GX mobo
20GB HD
15" CRT shite monitor @ 1028x768
Its not a package as such, I just got a new mobo, cpu and ram a year or two ago. I was a lot less knowledgable when I got them all and was pretty much in the hands of the guy in the shop who put it together for me, but it was a big step up from the 433Mhz cpu I had before. A new CPU is in the pipeline, but it'll be a way off yet due to lack of money.
I've got several spyware type things, and they do a pretty good job between them, so I doubt theres much more I can do in that respect.

Most importantly, download/install/run the latest version of ccleaner and make sure you have ran a few "defrags" on your C drive

While it might not help superfast your PC, something you (and others) might like is Rambooster (http://www.sci.fi/~borg/rambooster/). I always have it running, and apart from telling you how much RAM is free it monitors the RAM and automatically tries to free some if the amount availible drops below a certain limit which you can set. *gasps for air* ANyways, running it after playing games/photoshop etc. can speed up the rest of your computer using by quite a bit
Hope that helps, Stuk
