I tried last week, it crashed my computer, which was moderately annoying, but not scary.deject wrote:Have none of you guys played System Shock 2? WTF. That shit is still scary.

I still find it harder to get as emotionally attached to games because they still feel like a game to me. AvP had me shitting myself though, and the first couple of levels on AvP2 were extremely tense as you don't see an alien for aaaages, but you just know they're going to get you at some point. You find yourself not wanting to go into places because you know that you're screwed if they find you there. I think that's the closest I've ever got to actual fear in a game. Playing Doom for the first time had my pulse racing too, being new to the first person perspective.
Some games can be creepy rather than scary. The beginning of Doom 3 was good with the lights going out and everything going haywire. Resident Wiivil had me jump a few times. Stalker didn't - even the invisible face-sucky things weren't very scary. The bit insode the transmitter was a bit bloody creepy though.
Even so, none of them have got me as emotional as a good horror film like The Shining.

Fucking. This. The ghost of the little girl still gives me goosebumps today. I love that game. Nothing has yet come close to The Cradle in Thief: Deadly Shadows though. It's the only time, in a game, I can honestly say I was fucking bricking it - genuinely unsettling.

Fucking hard. I actually found myself with chest pain my heart was beating so fast, I could barely bring myself to explore the cradle. Even though I know the game mechanics allow for hiding, the whole run up to the end of this game, the assassins with the glowy eyes, the cradle, all of it was fucking freaky. A game that I had to play in short bursts.

Everyone should play Vampire: Masquerade, if only to play as a Malkavian. Bloody good game with some real creepy bits (the previously mentioned hotel scene made me jump a good number of times).
I never managed to complete it though, hard drive died right near the end just as I was fighting a sodding massive werewolf.
