Massive delays on PM notification emails.

Post by Dr. kitteny berk »

I just got the notifications for PMs that were sent to me at

13:48, 13:53 and 14:42 (their time tags are correct and match PMs I got) but the emails have only just shown up in gmail.

I get the impression something is broken somewhere.

I've been having similar problems, except that my PM notifications go to Hotmail rather than Gmail.

On a possibly related note, I've noticed occasional errorz in the 'new PM notification' pop-up window. I seem to recall something about an invalid parameter, but I'll make a note next time I see it.

I think that only happens on the disco board, and perhaps the FP because of the way the forum is stuck together.

Emails are sent as part of the same process as sending PMs, so any delays can only be server related.

Possibly something to do with this, or any number of other problems DH has.

I'll have a look at the popup though.

I think the email delay issue has been about for a fair while.

Is it because someone is thrashing the server with connections and page requests? :P

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure it's not my doing :P

Well, it's definitely not me. The only thing the campus wireless connection here is capable of testing is my patience.

I'm fairly sure it was directed at me. as somehow (my usually saturated) 8mbit line is apparently able to maintain enough connections to 5punk (despite very few being visible on this end) to hammer/crash the apache server 5punk is hosted on.

-my pm email has arrived-.

: Sent: 16:59
: Delivered: 17:14.

The delay seems to be the first hop. So yeah, not much I can do about that I'm afraid.

It was but I was only joking, I'm sure it's just that you're keen. I can only see page requests not connections. I'm going to investigate a bit further once I get more access to the 5punk control room.
