I was balking at paying £50 for a card only slightly better than my existing FX5600 - then I checked and found I only actually had a Ti 4600 ***belms*** - the 5x00 is the GoForce in my laptop. What a spacktard. So I guess my budget is now £40 to buy what I *thought* I had, plus £40 to upgrade - PCI-E not an option just yet

So 80 notes gets me a 9800 or an FX5900 - I guessing the Radeon poos all over the GF, infact even a 9700 would.

Thanks for all the info, and in the end it was down to an Radeon x700 or a GeForce 6600 which have both recently had AGP versions released (at least more recently than the tomshardware test)

This is a straight comparison between the PCI-e models, both showing as rather respectable mid-range versions of the current top-range x800 and 6800. My options were the budget versions of these cards, both around £80 - requirements only that they had a standard VGA socket and were AGP - and in neither am I expecting results quite as good as shown as for their XT and GT cousins in the test.

Reasons for getting a new card/first things to do with new card:
- See what HL2 is supposed to look like
- Run hlcoast
- Make a (HL2) level with all the fancy bits in it and just swank around like the dog's
- Play Doom 3 at a resolution higher than 640 (although it still looked damn good, that antialiasing worked well)
- Buy and play the Doom 3 addon
- see if BF2 demo works
- maybe try Sims2 again
- get GTA:SA and crank it up
- whinge about something else, like slow processor or memory

Since my biggest benefit is/will be to Source engine games with a bit of Dooming the choice was marginally in the 6600's favour, but other factors came into play:

- Brand loyalty. Sounds stupid, because (as was pointed out) they all just want your cash, but I've gone with every iteration of GeForce, and 3Dfx Voodoo before it and am familiar with the (il)logic of the driver releases. I've never overclocked anything in my life (unless I was trying to break it) and I've always insisted on Intel processors. I suppose that makes me sound like a nobtard to many gamers, but the truth is when it comes to hardware: I just don't fucking understand it. I stick with what I know.
- It is probably the singularly worst time to buy an nVidia card as they are about to announce a new card approximately 5 minutes after I finish this message. Spookily enough though, that is exactly (give or take a month) what happened when I bought my GF1, 3 and Ti4600, yet I have been completely happy with all of them during their (spiralling) lifecycles.
- Not for one or the other, but I found a lot of comments from buyers of both these cards that they felt pretty stupid for buying £300 cards in the past - and (especially now it's actually my own money) I tend to agree - the review above highlighted how quickly the high-end cards depreciate, and to be honest the rest of my system is too shit to take advantage of any performance gains from kick-ass new cards.

and apparently i had payed £20 more i could of got a graphics card that runs bf2
i may see if i can dig out some more ram on the cheap and just set the graphics card to share system RAM if such a thing is possible

In case you missed it, I went for the GF6600, which arrived on Monday - but my to-do list quickly changed.

Pre-Mon
1. Run loads of benchmarks on existing system [bigted] in anticipation of massive performance gains with the new card.

Mon
1. Go into work and collect new card (I'm on holiday this week, but couldn't be arsed to get up for the postman, so had it delivered there). Wave it around a bit, dancing and showing off, then go home.
2. Install new card in bigted. *beep* *beep* *beep* WTF?
3. Replace with old card and surf: existing i845 motherboard only has 4x AGP, new card needs 8x, minimum. Smeg.
4. Check out quotes for suitable mobo+proc, bout 30 notes each - but I think of a cheaper way...

Tue
1. Sneak into work and "decommission" a 2.6GHz i865 machine [washuu] from my desk.
2. Try new card in it - it works! Washuu only has 512MB RAM, though - not enough for my Warcraft plugins (I think) - as I recently had to put 256M into bigted to run them. Also bigted has a massive case with lots of fans in, washuu is a standard desktop. Bigted's memory, and all the other bits of memory I have lying around are not compatible with washuu.
3. Think about ordering some memory, but actually do nothing.

Wed
1. Have a 5cheduled Warcraft session, so need a working system.
2. Play Warcraft.
3. Oops - it's 7am, better go to bed.

Thu
1. 7pm. Buy 512M of 333MHz memory - rather pricey from PC World, but shopping options are limited at that time.
2. 8pm. Gut both machines and install washuu's mobo into bigted. Washuu is now a pile of bits.
3. 10pm. More tiring than anticipated, bigted is ready.
4. Windows blue-screens on bootup. Even in safe/VGA mode, agp440x.sys looks the culprit.
5. 2am. Windows repaired, only had XP[SP0] CD handy (AGP 8x not supported until SP1), so lots of updates later - it works!
6. Run the benchmarks again - and it's pretty much twice as fast, even with DX9 stuff enabled.

So, back the original to-do:

It's a D865GLC with a 478 socket - it's all working fine for now, though it's all a bit old. Probably either upgrade or start fresh with everything new in 3 to 6 months time, rather than the year I usually wait.

Edit: The machine going back to work will have all the older bits, so I keep the GeForce working in the old case with the new(er) mobo and proc.
