In order to know which character class to choose, you might want to scan through the following before making your choice http://wiki.shartak.com/index.php/Class or just jump straight in as whatever you want.
The main wiki site for the game is http://wiki.shartak.com which IMO is definitely worth a read, and helps explain a lot of things I wasn't sure of at first.
Shartak Uber Map Creates a detailed map from user input. Requires a greasemonkey script which will only work once you find/trade a GPS in game, but is well worth it, as it provides a large map in the lower left hand corner of your screen, to help you navigate.
Unoffical Shartak Forum Great resource for asking questions and tips and tricks in game. The creator of Shartak watches this closely, and a lot of the improvements/additions have come as a direct result from a post on this forum.

Also worth mentioning are the large amount of Greasemonkey scripts you can find on this page :
http://wiki.shartak.com/index.php/The_S ... ey_scripts
I pretty much use all of them with the exception of kill tracking as I can't see the point.
The map overlay is very useful if you are an explorer like myself, as it helps give you an idea of the land you need to discover.
