I now have a DivX player so essential TV programmes, like Enterprise, dont get in the way of gaming (and I dont have to resort to using an antiquated VCR): http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=dp150408&v=users

It's pretty good, a bit basic but does the job well. It wont record off the TV as it's fairly cheap, £160, and UKNova has anything you'd want to watch from British TV.

Does anyone else have one or something similar, experiences?

I have had, and now thrown away because it broke, a divx dvd player.
Used to "aquire" divx movies and burn 4-5 of them onto a DVD and then play them on the telly.

However, after numerous movies going out of lip synch, and dark movies looking like an intro screen to super mario bros on the gameboy, I decided that DivX is infact a bag of shit.

I utterly fucking hate it now, and have had so many bad experiences with DivX/Xvid that I've decided if it isn't over 4GB, then it's a big bag of wank

I'll only watch full DVD's now, and personally havign to wait and download stuff I forgot to watch would annoy the living fuck out of me, so I just use my DVD/VCR combo box, by insterting a "Video Cassette" and hitting the record key.

As long as there's a lot of heads on your VCR, and you use decent tapes, the picture quality is far better than DivX, and it's a damn site easier/quicker too.

Obviously hard disk recorders are better, especially as they can track programmes you like and so on, but I didn't want to shell out that sort of money at the time.

Hopefully your experience with DivX will be a better one than mine, but personally I think it's utter shit, and will never use it again :!:

Divx/Xvid is incredible, *FAR* better than mpeg for compressing stuff.

The problem often comes if you try to watch divx/xvid on a tv, it's not made for that, it's made for computer screens.

otherwise, get better rips.

also, if you're stealing stuff, it's only fair to buy the dvd, i use divx as a sample, and buy anything i like.

Does a 100Hz TV help with this? It's supposed to be good for consoles.

From what I've seen the quality is ok, I'm not expecting DVD quality but I find it hard to believe a VCR can look at good as some of the files I have. But then I havent used one for sometime and they were cheap models.

It's mainly for TV shows and curios like Star Wars Holiday Special, which is very, very bad. I love films too much to watch bastardised versions. *

mostly you might just need to up the brightness a little.

Well I havn't had any problems with Divx/Xvid (except trying to encode to Divx or Xvid, but that's a whole different bag of worms)

I download loads of TV (not many films) in Divx and can't fault it to be honest, and now that I have my Xbox with XBMC I wirelessly stream video to the living room (where mr Xbox lives) and watch them on my widescreen TV.

XBMC does a great job as far as picture quality is concernerd, and Divx is by far the best for wireless streaming cos the file size is nice and small (relatively)

I still video loads of stuff (on my cheap as chips 10 year old Matsui VCR :D ) but the TV i download is the US stuff not on over here yet, 24, Lost etc.

(plus the occasional thing from UKNova that i didn't know was on, or forgot to record)
