Been looking into upgrading, have a few things I wanted to ask you lovely people opinions on.

What Im looking at getting,

Shuttle SK83G - 64 Bit AMD socket 754
2gb cosair PC3200 DDR Ram (2 x 1gb sticks)
AMD64 3400, skt 754 (obviously)
Western digital raptor 73gb SATA HDD (10,000rpm)
And then putting the Radeon 9800pro from my existing system into it.

All that comes out around £800, which is do-able. But any suggestions on things I could save on?

Is going for a skt 754 the best option, or should I go for a skt 939 board?

Quick question, are you absolutely sure you want a shuttle system?

The only reason I ask, is that cooling/graphics cards etc.. seem to be more pricey due to size and so on.

A cheaper option would be to go with a standard size PC/motherboard however I assume you want a shuttle for it's ickleness.

I think a good place to save would be RAM, do you really need 2gig?

Have you owned a shuttle before? My friend has one, and it's great... until you need to take stuff in and out of it!

Yes, I have owned a shuttle before, my current PC is. I prefer SFF PCs, for various reasons.

As for the RAM, I suppose I dont <i>need</i> 2gb, but then I probably dont need to upgrade just yet anyway Just Im thinking that if I do upgrade, I might as well make it worth my while.

I was more thinking of the quality of the RAM, as I have gone for pretty top of the range stuff. Doesnt it make that much difference? (I have always had cheap generic RAM)

Fact is your graphics card is old, based largely off really old tech (like the r300 core from the 9700) and it'll want upgrading long before the rest of that system.

At which point you'll be able to go no higher than a single agp setup, while the world will be using fuckoff arrays of radeons (nvidia fanboys will kill themselves in the multi-card wars of 2005)

Not to mention you'll need a second HDD in there, that 2gb ram will serve little use to you in reality and that as nice as shuttles and sff machines are, the PSUs suck.

My current system is pretty underpowered to be honest (Althon XP 2000, 1 gb of generic ram) and I cant see myself lasting too much longer with it, but then again I dont want to tie myself down with a mobo that will be no good in a few months time...

Also I can hear my bank account weeping at the thought of buying multiple ATi cards!

*edit* And also, it wouldnt have had another HDD on it, as I have a seperate PC that works as a dump for all my crap, this one would be for gaming and nowt else

The noise isn't, im afraid.

Mine's quite quiet. Considering it's got about five fans in it, it sits nicely on my desk with a simple purr.

get a board with SLI and a 939 core. Much faster, and supports duel PCI-Express cards.

I was going to get one of these, but my dad was like "LOL!!1 no." so I'll may him pay.... LATER... with RICHES.

one option could be going half way

a cheap 939 agp board and a gig of ram

buy new mobo and graphics card later (a shitload cheaper than buying a replacement shittle)

My fan on my graphics card has gone a bit tits up recenty and it now has the screechest of all sounds, but i will be fixing that soon :/

I had no Idea ATi were doing there own version, whats that like?

Get it sorted now unless you want to buy a new card... my 9800 went down recently because I ignored some of the fan sounds too long.
