I've read many of Bill Bryson's books, and recently couldn't find a decent book, so started re-reading one of his books, "A short history of nearly everything", and I realised how you guys would absolutely love his witty but extremely intelligent style. He's a Yank who lived over here in the UK for many years, and wrote newspaper columns both here and there. Other books of his I've read and thoroughly enjoyed include "Notes from a small island" (Aspect of Yank living in UK), "Notes from a big country" (Aspect of going back to America after living in UK for 10 years or so), "A walk in the woods" (Almost wrote "Wank in the woods", but this is a diary of his 500mile trek along the appalachian mountains), and "Down Under" (About Australia innit).
But definitely recommended!

'A Short History' is fan-bloody-tastic. A really good read and extremely informative. Not only worth a read, but several re-reads.

'A short history....' is my bible, the audio version as read by him is also very good for bored listenings.

I knew I'd find some fellow fans! Has anyone read any of his other books and thoroughly recommend them? I've really found myself in a rut for books recently, and need lots as I've got a beast of a holiday coming up.

Terry Pratchet.
Also, I like some of what Dan Abnet(t?) does, but that's more of because of how I spent my teenage years (Fuck me, feels weird saying that)

Mine's in Spain so I just have to send him a text. I'll get him a bottle of Ledaig (nice smokey single malt) when he gets back.

'Neither Here Nor There' is very, very good. I had tears of laughter running down my face reading him describe Italian driving and parking.

"Mother Tongue", a bryson look at how the english language developed through countless years, I have an interest in language and history, and as you well know bryson can make all things interesting, it may sound a bit boring, but give it a read and you'll get hooked.
