Jacku
Dwarf Guardian Armourer L10
Kittychan
Hobbitses Burglar Tinker L9
Kittysan
Human Captain Woodsman L9
Kittysama
Elf Lore-master Historian L9
As usual I like to try everything out, rather than stick with one class - I'd have liked to have a go as a Minstrel, but there aren't any other races, so I'd be doing all the same quests I'd already done. I've rather overdone Hunter and Champion in the other MMOs.
For info, you start in short story segment, then a locked-in beginners area until you reach around L5 and do another story quest, after which you go to each race's start towns, can pick a profession, explore and meet.
If you need a quick guide choosing, being in the Shire is pretty cool, so hobbitses are good, but some of the quests are a bit..."hobbity". Jacku's the only one I haven't died with yet, but the Dwarf start area is stereotypically very similar to WoW's. Elves start area is pretty and the quests typically wishy-washy, Humans is probably the most challenging - there's a particular quest and a beast near the road than can pwn you when you're first starting.
To save you the bother, here are the professions you can choose, since the game gives you next-to-no info until you have to select one:
Each profession has three jobs:
Armourer: Metalsmith, Prospector, Tailor
Explorer: Tailor, Forester, Prospector
Armsman: Weaponsmith, Prospector, Woodworker
Tinker: Jeweller, Prospector, Cook
Yeoman: Cook, Farmer, Tailor
Woodsman: Forester, Woodworker, Farmer
Historian: Scholar, Weaponsmith, Farmer
Prospectors: entirely self-sufficient, mine ore and refine it into ingots
Forester: collects wood and refines it using wax you have to keep buying, plus can refine hides into leather
Farmer: plants and harvests from certain fields - none of which can be found in the Dwarves or Elves start areas
Woodworker: intermediate job - turns treated wood into (mostly) weapon components and wooden weapons
Tailor: turns cloth (rare near start) and leather into clothing and light/medium armour and armour components
Metalsmith: turns armour components and ingots into heavy armour (which you won't be able to wear until L15)
Weaponsmith: turns wooden weapon components and ingots into weapons
Cook: cooks ingredients you mostly have to buy into stuff you can only use out of combat
Jeweller: turns ingots into wearable buff items
Scholar: supposedly makes scrolls out of loot drops, not found any yet
Edit: Unstickied for now.
