So I (nearly) bought a PSP

Found that gamestation in town have a fairly unscratched PSP in stock, on firmware 2.71, for £100 including charger and any pre-owned game under £15. Seems a reasonable deal, and I already have a 1GB Memory Stick Micro with a Pro Duo adapter that I can use so that should be ok. It also doesn't have that IC1003 label visible inside the door, so I believe that makes it a TA-081 or below revision. I've asked them to put it aside for me so I can trade in some old PS2 games and whatever else I have lying around and go back in tomorrow for it.
I think its a reasonably good deal, but I will need to get a USB cable and probably a case for it, but thats no real issue. The main purpose of my post is to find out the best way of downgrading it with minimal risk of bricking it. Is it best to upgrade to 2.80 and then revert it to 1.5?
My second question once homebrew is up and running is what are the games and apps you'd recommend that I acquire? I want something to play AVI files, but would I be best converting them to PSP format? What are the "must-have" games out there for the PSP? Having never thought about getting one until recently, I've never bothered keeping an eye on the releases so I have no idea what I've missed. One thing I did spot is that they're making an Earthworm Jim game for it which is all of teh win.

I'd upgrade it to 2.80 and then use the "Easy 2.80 downgrader" as I have done this myself on 3 PSP's so far, and they have all been relatively painless.
There are soem downgraders for the 2.71 but I have never used them, so I can't say whether they are even easier or not.
If you are worried I could talk you through it on Teamspeak or Xfire at some point.
As for games, you simply must have Loco Roco, Ratchet & Clank (IMO), Puzzle Bobble (brilliant for toilet gaming), Everybody's Golf, Killzone Liberation, Lumines (Lumines II is supposed to be a bit better but not played it yet)
There are tonnes of emulators available, and usually you can find an emulator pack using bit torrent sites.
As for the media player thingy, have a google around, and definitely check out
http://pspupdates.qj.net/ for all the latest homebrew releases, as their reviews on the homebrew usually give a good enough feel of whether the homebrew is any good or not.
It's a lot easier just using a "play anything" homebrew player than converting all your videos, but once again, their are tonnes of PSP/PC apps that can do this, and
is your friend for this.
If you want, I can send you every one fo my 200 or so PSP games I have on DVD's, or failing that if you go to the next LAN, you can just download them all from my external hard drive.

UPDATE : You could use this for 2.71
http://dl.qj.net/Downgrader-2.71-LITE-P ... /catid/114 however it does mention that certain models will brick if you are not careful, whereas some fo the 2.80 downgraders do not have this problem, as they can eb used on almost any model.
I'd go to 2.80 if I were you, seems like the safest option before downgrading.

Rightio, I'm just getting the
2.80 firmware now, so once I've got the system I'll update to that, and then I think I'd like to take you up on that offer of a talk-through when it comes to downgrading. Thanks mate.
I'll check out those different games then, and see if I can get any of them as the included one when I buy it. I'd quite like FIFA 07 too, because I think you can synchronise the PSP and PS2 versions which would be cool for when I go down to visit my parents or something.
With regard to your DVDs of games, that would be ace! How many DVDs are they on?

If you're after a USB cable, I heartily recommend one of these. Mine is very useful indeed.

Yes indeed. I have one of those and it's an essential piece of kit.

Ah yes, I saw one of those in Game earlier. I shall certainly invest.
Does anyone have a universal media player for PSPs that they'd recommend?

Games I'm looking to get, in no particular order:
Prince of Persia: Rival Swords
Viewtiful Joe
Loco Roco
Killzone: Liberation
MGS: Portable Ops
Every Extend Extra
Sega Megadrive Collection
Chili Con Carnage
Me and my Katamari
Burnout Dominator
I'll also get a 4GB card I think. What size memory sticks do you guys use?

Add Metal Slug Anthology to that games list.
Buy the cable Stoat mentioned, I have it and it's ace.
Update your firmware via the /downloads section with these
Instructions and using this firmware
2.80 EBOOT.PBP
I only have a 1GB stick which is a bit of a pain as soem games come in just over 1GB, and the very best price you can get at the moment (trust me I have looked a lot recently) is a SanDisk 4GB PRO Duo for £35.90 (£38.40 inc delivery) from the following link
http://www.picstop.co.uk/PSP-Memory/San ... /Feed_2252
(Copy and pastes into the browser, it's a bit too long for the forum to handle)
See how useful I can be now I have spare time on my hands

Yays! Trading in 5 old PS2 games has meant that for the total of £90 I now own a PSP on 2.71, Killzone Liberation, one of those USB/charger cables and a shiney new
Logitech Case. Woo!

Okiddilydokily, I've updated to the latest version of homebrew firmware (3.40 OE-A). I've swept an ISO of Ratchet and Clank, put said ISO in ISO folder on memory stick, but it seems to just freeze up when I try to load it. What am I missing?
Edit: Going to the recovery menu and setting speed in UMD/ISO to 300 has fixed the problem. Happy Gaming Teim Go!
