Ideas for the Entertainment Forum
Been having a think about what I might do to kick off something other than the guess the film thread to keep this forum going, and was going to do a “Movie Mini Review” topic, but looks like Dog Pants beat me to it! Seems to have died a bit, but when I’m at home, and can be bothered, I’ll do something similar for my films. The most featured genre in my collection is probably gangster films, Godfather, Casino etc, but I have a reasonably wide collection of around 100 films.
Anyway, aside from trying to get the mini-reviews going again, I’m proposing to do a “Films Released This Week” type thing, similar to Tezz’s efforts on the gaming front. If people go to see any new releases then it would be nice to have a small overview, with a see it/rent it/steal-it-if-you-can-be-bothered/have-a-pot-noodle-and-a-wank-instead kind of rating system. Since films can be so dependant on taste, something more than just stars out of 10 is needed really.
On the music front, I don’t tend to listen to too much current stuff, other than what I hear on the occasions I have the radio on, but if there is a music-buff out there who wants to list/review new releases, then that would be much appreciated. I have a general dislike of many of the guitar bands around at the moment, mostly due to the fact that with half of their songs, it could be any one of about half a dozen different groups singing it, which just doesn’t appeal. That said, a few of them are growing on me, especially the Arctic Monkeys. Anyway, there must be someone around who has enough of an interest to keep that side of things updated, maybe on a monthly basis. Any volunteers?
For television, I really don’t watch much on TV at the moment, but am planning to do reviews on some of the things I do watch. When I plan to sit down and watch something, it tends to be 24, Lost or Heroes at the moment, and I keep meaning to start the latest (and final ) series of the Sopranos too. For crashing a bit when I get in from work, then Scrubs wins hands-down. Every night of the week it’s possible to watch it from 6 till 8 on various channels I have through Virgin, and it never fails to entertain me. Anyway, unless someone beats me to it then I’ll knock up something for them when I can too.
I don’t think that books need such a regular updating, but extension/expansion of the recommended reading thread would certainly by good. I’ve personally found it very useful, and even spent about 10 minutes in Waterstones trying to get the thread up on my phone so I could decide what to buy! A few slightly more in-depth reviews of books and/or authors could be good though, and something that I may try to do when I have time.
Does anyone have anything else they want to see in this forum?

Fewer words?
Anyway, I actually want more words, just spread out over more threads, and not including such a high proportion of phrases such as "moar cloos", "wrong" and fewer links to eion's IMDB page.

It's not my fault that you guys suck at movies.Lateralus wrote:...and not including such a high proportion of phrases such as "moar cloos", "wrong" and fewer links to eion's IMDB page.
The very brief ones the Dog Pants did in his mini-review thread were pretty good, and enough to inform people whether or not to bother with a film. How about a one-word conclusion to a single sentence/paragraph review? Reams of text are never really going to appeal, and are as unlikely to be read as they are to be written.eion wrote:
One sentence or one (short) paragraph reviews might be better? I'm all in favour of brevity, but a single word... isn't actually helpful as a review.
Seems reasonable.Lateralus wrote:

I'd like to see everyone who uses 5punk actually bother to comment on the latest album they bought, and whether it was any good or not.
I know a lot of the music 5punkers must have is but I'm sure a lot of you still go out and buy stuff you really like, so why not mention it, and link to amazon or something, with a quick little description on what you like or dislike about it.
Also, the old books thread with everyone jumping onto one post is a very very bad thing (as I've mentioned before with posts like this) as now it looks like nobody is interested in books here, when in fact there are lots and lots of worthwhile posts all bundled into one thread now, and then forgotten about.
If you read a book, and think it's shit or fantastic, just post a new thread with the name and the author, and whether you liked it or not, and for what reason (without giving the plot away too much).
Same goes for film really, and I think the new releases this week is a great idea, and I'd suggest listing new releases for both the States, and the U.K, as it would get us Brits interested in what is coming up in the next few weeks and commenting on it.
If there are any available, linking the film name to a trailer page on apples website would be a good idea to.
Just my $0.02
