You mean you downloaded and installed the Custom Edition from /downloads? I think that needs to go on top of a purchased Halo game, if I recall from playing a while ago.

Did you use this patch?

I remember something about not being able to jump straight to the latest patch, there is one in the middle somewhere. I shall try to find it for you mate.

Just incase your version is already on 1.05, you may need to download and read the following section on this page

Game Updates
Halo Auto-Patcher Update
230 KB
Halo for Windows v1.0 through v1.04 will receive the normal auto-patch message, however, a change in the auto-patcher will require users of v1.05 to follow a special manual-update procedure outlined below.

1. Save the auto-patcher update file to the game install directory, such as c:\program files\microsoft games\halo. Overwrite the existing file. Remember to "save" this file, don't try to "open" it directly from the Web site.
2. After saving the file to the proper location, double-click the exe to install. If you receive an error message (such as strings.dll not found) you likely did not save it to the proper game install directory.
3. Start Halo and the new updated auto-patcher should prompt you to update your version to v1.06.
