IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT 5PUNK.CO.UK

Please see the following post for an update:
http://www.5punk.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic. ... 5554#85554
Well chaps, I've been thinking about this for some time now, and I've come to a dificult decision in regards to my future here running 5punk.

Due to the decreased spare time I have, and the lack of actually playing any games in the last year or so, I have decided it's a bit silly spending every bit of free time I have running a gaming website, when I don't actually "Game" that much anymore.

What this means is that I wish to offer the 5punk.co.uk domain, and the current dreamhost hosting account across to the highest bidder here at 5punk.

I wouldn't consider trying to sale it outside of 5punk, and I have already offered the site to the admins here at 5punk who have declined.

If you would be interested in buying the site and running it yourself, please feel free to pm me. The only way I can see the bidding thing working is to update this post with the current top bid as and when someone offers it to me, and let it run for a week or two.

It will be a sad day when I hand over the keys to 5punk, and believe me, after creating such a successful community, it will be very very hard to let it go, however I know it's the right decision for me.

Also worth mentioning is that I won't want to leave the community as such, I'd still browse the forums (all be it not as frequently) and jump online and play games against the rest of you as much as possible, but I'm not able to moderate/administrate 5punk anymore.
I will also stick around online and be happy to answer any questions you may have on 5punk, and what's been done in the past, or how things work.

I have very fond memories of 5punk, and it's been a great thing to work on and create, and what's made it so fantastic are the 5punkers themselves, and I think it's only fair that someone with enthusiasm/time and a fresh look on things takes over, otherwise I worry 5punk could just crawl to a grinding halt in the distant future without someone having a clear direction on where it wants to be.

Hopefully you can all understand my actions, and appreciate why this has to happen, and feel free to reply to this post or pm me with any concerns/questions you may have on the subject.

I think the starting price for a site like this should be £300 as I definitely wouldn't accept anything under that mark, but narf I hope for a bit more than that figure.

You might think "Z0mG £300", but after doing a bit of research and seeing what other sites go for just based on page views/traffic alone, I think it's a fair starting price narf.
If you require any traffic analysis or so on, I should be able to get you a years worth from Dreamhost if you so wish.

So there you have it, the beginning of the end for your glorious Elephant leader

May I suggest just handing it over to the other orange people?

Between them I'm sure they can manage to afford/run this place. and it'll mean 5punk will stay how it is.

Zomg, £300

w..t..f !? 5punk without WEY is like ....

Edit: what does it actually mean to own the site? If the orange people do the admin stuff, and donations take care of the hosting, does the actual owner have to be hugely active? If it's a money issue, I'm sure a 'Save the 5punk' tin rattle would work. We can't let it go outside the 5punky community, that'd be terrible. Image someone splashing godaweful advertising all over the place :ignore:

I have to agree with Berk, by selling it for such a sum inevitably the buyer will want to recoup that money (read: ads / selling soul) which in itself will be bad.

Even if this means you keep legal ownership of the domain if you think it is an asset.

I have to be honest, I don't see how a site like this (which is non commercial and has no ads) could be worth that much, unless it was converted into one. Making 5punk into a business would sort of defeat its purpose and charm.

how about we do this to buy it, too. We could have it held as a group thing, with one (democratically decided) trustee type person to be the official owner.

Exactly what I was thinking as I read the post. I have no interest in running the site myself, but I'd love to chip in with other 5punkers to help keep it going.

It's a shame you're stepping down WEY, 5puk is your (other) baby after all - but I completely understand your decision. If I were you though I be dead fucking chuffed with the way 5punk has turned out - definitely something to be proud of.

:ahoy:

I think this might be the only practical solution if nobody steps forward - people make a one-off donation to pay for the site and WEY gets the profit. Deciding who play the role as leader could be tricky, but whoever it was would be the one who pays the fees ultimately and so should be given the helm because of the financial responsibility. Leading by committee might sound like a good idea, but it rarely is and I'd prefer to have a single point of contact for decisions.

Arr WEY! This is all a bit crazy, can't say I'm surprised though. You've got your (very valid) reasons.

I will happily contribute to the overall sale price but would like to have no responsibility at all in the day to day running. Plus I'm barely financially responsible enough to afford clothes, let alone other bills. So yeah, chalk me up for a buy in but I'd like to be one of those really quiet shareholders that doesn't really have to do anything unless a multi national corporation wants my shares. Then, and only then, will I triumphantly step up, give a massive speech and change everyone's ideas about life and money. Like in Mr Deeds.

So to the point. One or two designated admins and lots of 'shareholders' maybe?

Fucking told you he was off to do a new series of The F Word!

So... what happens if no-one buys the site?

Don't worry. I'd never let that happen.

I'm rather like the others here: I know next to nothing about running sites such as these, and would probably be a bit crap at it. Hence my questions above :above: If we could club together to take the pain off the asking price, I'd more than happily bung in the majority share and make sure the fees are paid on time or whatever is needed.

I don't mind taking point on the server side of things, but financially I can barely afford pints and clothes while I try to make a go of this business lark, so I can offer a tiny monetary donation and/or be the pimp of the servers / domain name.

My point is that wey is trying to sell the right to spend £120 a year on hosting to us for £300.

To which I say bollocks.

However, I do have a hosting dealy which I'm happy to offer up for 5punk's usage (I don't want admin rights or any shit like that)

When it comes down to it, all you have of any real value here is a community and a database. (and you can't sell the community)
