Tournament Format

Been doing a bit of looking around, and I'm having difficulty coming up with a format for the tournament. I think that with 10 teams its going to have to start with 2 groups of 5 and then move on to a knock-out stage. This could be better because it means everyone will get at least 4 games rather than being knocked out after one, but it doesn't lend itself to a quick tournament...

My initial idea is for group stages where the top 2 from each group for through. This means it goes straight in to semi-finals afterwards which potentially speeds it up a bit, but its still a lot of games to organise. Are there any alternative formats that I'm overlooking for 10 teams?

Hehehe, I know. With 2 groups of 5, with 2 qualifying from each, its a <strike>13</strike> 23-match tournament. Last time we were lucky to have 1 happen a week. We should be finished just in time for Duke Nukem Forever.

Editz! Group games would entail 23 games in total.

What's the rush?

how about BO-RO and <strike>Winnar</strike>Losar get two byes, so we'd have the other 8 teams play until they get to the final two, then have those two compete with BO-RO and Winnar?

or we could just do a straight up round-robin tournament.

No rush as such, its just that I imagine interest will wane with time. However, a round-robin would mean that everyone stays in till the end, so that could work.

Worked it out on the way to work and I think a round-robin of 10 teams would equate to 45 matches in total, which I think really is going to push the limits of our collective attention span! :) As such, I'm going to vote for the original idea of 2 groups of 5 with 4 qualifying to the semi-final stage meaning 23 games in total.

Poll added!

Wa.. Wait..
Two groups of five? :(
Surely that would sully the existing perfectly balanced teams?

Sod that for a game of biscuits.
Round robin FTW!

2 groups of 5 pairs/teams. Existing perfectly balanced teams would remain, but would only initially compete against 4 others instead of 9 others. For example:

Group 1
  • 1. Grimjoose
    2. Team Nazi
    3. GunPants
    4. Stoat2bits
    5. He-ject
Group 2
  • A. Feck Elephant Arse
    B. Anhamong
    C. Fabchicken
    D. BO-RO?
    E. Team Runner-Up
Once each team in the respective groups has played the other 4 teams, there will be a league-table of sorts, and the top two from each team would go through to the next round, being semi-finals. This means everyone has at least 4 games, and the finalists still only have 6, with 23 in total. I just can't see interest being maintained enough for 45 games to happen in the round-robin format.

Games in this format would happen as follows:

Code: Select all

Group 1
1vs2
1vs3 2vs3
1vs4 2vs4 3vs4
1vs5 2vs5 3vs5 4vs5

Teams i and ii win

Group 2
AvsB
AvsC BvsC
AvsD BvsD CvsD
AvsE BvsE CvsE DvsE

Teams x and y win

Semi finals:
x vs ii

y vs i

Final

Total: 23 games
The alternative is this:

Code: Select all

AvsB
AvsC BvsC
AvsD BvsD CvsD
AvsE BvsE CvsE DvsE
Avs1 Bvs1 Cvs1 Dvs1 Evs1
Avs2 Bvs2 Cvs2 Dvs2 Evs2 1vs2
Avs3 Bvs3 Cvs3 Dvs3 Evs3 1vs3 2vs3
Avs4 Bvs4 Cvs4 Dvs4 Evs4 1vs4 2vs4 3vs4
Avs5 Bvs5 Cvs5 Dvs5 Evs5 1vs5 2vs5 3vs5 4vs5

Total: 45 games
Note the previous error in calculations for the group games...

I think we should do it like Robot Wars where everyone piles in and tries to immobilize the the other robots, then the Ref Bot counts you out or you get pushed into the CPZ where the house robots get you and put you in the pit or on the flipper, but rotating hardened steel blades that may shatter are not allowed.
