If you're still using an unlicensed version of WinZIP and you're fed up with the nagging screen try this out as it's free at the moment:
http://www.securezip.com/
I've switched to it for work as mine was unlicensed, naughty. It does everything WinZIP does and more, even has some kind of Outlook integration and apparently more secure encryption.

I'm still quite fond on WinRar and at a push 7Zip.

Well yeah, WinRAR beats all but if you're stuck with a nagging WinZIP this is probably a significant step up. I use WinRAR for personal.

Would quite like to get rid of the annoying 'Register/close' screen that pops up with every winrar archive. It's really quite good and opens all sorts of archives, and compresses very well - But that initial screen popping up does get a little tedious.

If you look on the floor you might find something to help with that.

I love a good compression algorithm me - gives me goosebumps... (and yes I am that strange.) So switching "fanboy mode" on...
7zip
* For ZIP format 7-Zip provides compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than ratio provided by WinZip
* Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
* Unpacking: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS
* it's 7zip compression is as good as if not better than Rar
* Open source GNU LGPL license means it's free.
I notice it's becoming more common on Sourceforge and the like too.

I like WinRAR for most use, I feel it's a far more complete and usable product, much more polished.
On saying that I do keep 7zip about for when I need to compress stuff in 7zip or bzip2
