I broke it

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

I broke it

Post by mrbobbins »

fucksocks.

Stinking PC wont boot :x

I took out my mobo to reseat my cooler, now it wont even POST.
I don't even get any beep codes, even without any memory in I don't get any beep codes, I got one long beep when I turned it on without the GFX card power connector plugged in but with just CPU, memory and GFX card theres nothing.

The MOBO power light is on and all the fans spin up but no beeps and no post, tried resetting the CMOS jumper and still nothing. Also tried all cominations of ram.

If I'd screwed the CPU I'd at least get a beep wouldn't I?

Ang helpful suggestions before I break out the jam?

Also, you didn't skip the 4/8 pin aux connector did you?

Remember to check with just the CPU in.

You could also try unplugging everthing, pulling the battery and leaving the machine for 5-10 minutes.

Most likely a short or something weird.

check for any extra stand-offs.

if you still have the problem, swear at it and try again.

Cheers for suggestion!!

Very strange, it boots fine out of case, I guess I'll carefully install it back and try again. Weired that it gave an error beep for the lack of GFX card power if was shorting.

Also if it was shorting.. is this likely to damage anything?

The graphics card makes that noise itself.

Most likely it was just an oddity rather than a short.

Unlikely anything will be damaged (you'd know if it was, the blue smoke...)

This is what can happen if you're a flash cupcake with a 8800 gfx card, the God of Pixels is punishing you.

My god of pixels loves being out in the open air, just not confined to a case,

Back in case, screwed down, wont boot again :?

We in the industry know that it's the magic blue smoke that runs all the high tech stuff in PC's these days. But if that magic blue smoke escapes from something, you're in trouble!

or just try only screwing the 4 corners in.

It's *possible* (but pretty unlikely) that the mobo tray isn't square and that the mobo is being twisted a little too hard.

Yeah check all the little mounting posts on the case and make sure the screws aren't touching any of the copper traces on the mobo.

:above: What berk said. Try putting it in/out of the case in the tiniest increments you can think of - near the case, on the case, resting in the case. That way you're busy narrowing down the problem and not getting annoyed.

I had a few brown pants moments when assembling mine, and had to look at the big number at the bottom of the receipt to remind myself to not start percussive maintenance.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Finally got it working, turned out to be the backplate fan speed adjuster for my heatsink, as soon as I took it out the case it booted fine, reinserted it in a different PCI hole and it worked ok,

Weird one!, and some fun* panic for while
