Hello, have installed the new PC and I think I'm missing a few codecs. Some videos just don't quite seem...right, although that could also just be the clarity of the new screen.

What do you lot use and where do you get 'em? I've got a dir with some "codec packs" in but I think they're probably out of date now. Also I'd rather just install what I need, rather than every one on the planet, as I'm fairly sure that's what caused a lot of my crashes on the old box.

Basically all you should need for most stuff is

AC3 felcher (does ac3 decoding)

Xvid (decodes divx and xvid)

Beyond that, you might need ogg support for some weirdy rips

Ogg thingumy

Of course, you could just us VLC, but it's ugly.

I recommend MPUI over VLC because it's smaller, and works better in my experience.

OGG Vorbis (for those 'weirdy' rips. I'd rather see more stuff in Ogg Vorbis narf)

Then all you need is Media Player Classic cos as we all know Windows Media Player is teh pants.

I love MPC.
I've been playing with its built-in webserver today.
It's utterly pointless and fantastic.

It's an old favourite of mine too, while I usually just say "use VLC" to people I give Heroes, etc to, it's the only thing that works correctly with my weirdy MKV anime fansubs.

VLC is easier to operate in the dark, though.

yup, MPC needs codecs. (apart from for dvds, which it can do automajickally)

K-lite codec pack seems to be a good choice. I haven't encountered any video outside of VIVO that it can't play. Doesn't require any configuration and little bugger even comes with MPC.

I used to do the Berk way of installing codecs as needed, but on my last reinstall I tried and it worked out nicely. Only problems are that the ffdshow config stuff seems to be hiding (or at least I can't find it), and for some reason not all of my video files get thumbnails. Ahh well.

Why does no one else try MPUI? It's really good.

Maybe because MPC is lightweight, portable, works well and looks good (admittedly it can be a bit of a hassle to set stuff up in it if it doesn't just work), and because VLC has its fancy streaming stuff?

MPUI is like 2 .exe's and an .ini file. that's it. you can't get any more lightweight than that.

Media Player Classic is one .exe and one .ini. That's more lightweight.

well, fine. whatever. MPUI is still awesome.
