DVD writer just shat itself

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

DVD writer just shat itself

Post by TezzRexx »

Basically, I tried running Command and Conquer Generals of the CD in my DVD writer and after about 2 minutes I heard a HUEG bang and a spinning noise.

Open the tray... and the CD is in hundreds of pieces :faint:

WTF just happened? Do you reckon that the drive itself is fucked or was it the fault of the CD?

Probably an old and damaged cd, it's not unheard of for them to explode.

Empty the drive as well as you can, then try another disk that doesn't matter, it's possible the drive survived (but equally possible it died horribly)

Having briefly played Generals myself, I was going to suggest that.

lols, probably. Trackmania and Starforce make my PC vomit :| As I found out at the LAN last year :faint:

I've spazzed with the DVD drive now and I appear to have gotten most of it out but it sounds like there is one or two pieces possibly still in there. However it seems to work fine..

Possibly the cd wasn't seated correctly?

Or just span off the runner (can happen if its old and used frequently, applies to both drive and cd).

I know the motor on my old drive liked to stop dead occasionally instead of spinning down, you get a nice grinding noise as the cd spins round on the tray.

Most likely cracked CD, we had to put warnings on all the drives a few years back saying to check media before putting it in the drive, after someone was unlucky enough to get a faceful of shards when one failed as they opened the drive.

Yeah it's a toss up if your drive still works or not. I've heard of drives working after clearing all the polycarbonate pieces out of it, and others where the disc tray was completely fucked.

:above: That.

Either way, I'd be expecting to have to replace the drive sooner rather than later.

I had a ps2 that accepted swept media. One day a friend started it up and it made a whizzing noise and it didn't boot. when the drive was opened it literary was flung across the room like a shuriken...

The drive never worked again :)

If you give your PSP a short sharp twist, the UMD pings out, to much amusement.
