'The Crossing' Clarified

Righty ho 5punkers, this month’s Edge has a big old feature on forthcoming steam game ‘The Crossing’. Rather than blatantly flaunt copyright rules, I’ve decided to summarise it for you all to read as I know there was a lot of interest in this when it was first announced. Below is taken from Issue 174 of Edge, starting on page 50.

*Longish Read Warning*

Basically, The Crossing is set in modern day Paris over two alternate realities, one where the Renaissance of the 14th Century didn't happen, the Templars are still in control and at the forefront of a despotic Ro-Bo style rule. Victor Antonov (City 17's architect) looks to have knocked up a lovely version of a culture free Paris shown in a kind of industrial/gothic style going on the screen shots thus far. The majority of the game is played in this reality.

The other alternate reality (and the reality the game starts in) is a modern day Paris that, due to the government being overthrown and a series of terrorist attacks, is under mob rule and full of slums & riots.

We choose to be a story player or a soldier player. The story player is a highly trained anti-terrorist operative with skills similar to that of the three playable characters in the Alien vs. Predator games. Compared to the soldier player, the story player is stronger which highlights the need for soldier players cooperating to take down the story player/players on that map. The soldier player is able to use grapple hooks to swing spider-man-style from one place to another, presumably for highly tactical reasons (not enough games with grapple hooks if you ask me). Each map is likely to be limited to 10 players. These could be all humans or a sole human with 9 NPCs

According to Edge's feature the game is roughly 60% linear, story driven maps, the rest being multiplayer skirmish type maps for the soldier players to scrap on whilst waiting for a story player to come along. It can be played in full offline or online and other humans can either go Co-op with you through the story or fight against you throughout. A Matrix style ‘Agent Smith’ ability is available for the soldier players, freely jumping between NPCs and taking over their bodies and abilities to stop the story player advancing.

Apparently “the soldier players will have fun trying to kill each other, or working together to bring down a powerful story player. The story players will enjoy their sense of might.”

So there you have it, a wholly summarised version of a 4 page feature. I’m intrigued as to how this will pan out, with Antonov and the others behind it though, I’m excited.

I've heard a bit about this before. I've clicked 'Yay', but I'd say I was more optimistic than excited. Being designed for 10 players could make it ideal for 5punk though.

Sounds great, I think it would fit into the whole 5punk "ethos" really well
