So yes, I did it, I downloaded hacks, but only to see what they're like. What are they like? They're a load of bollocks is what they're like. Wallhack only works through one wall and aimbot never aims or randomly fires. Don't do hacks, they aren't worth it. I must have tried at least 5 different ones and reinstalled HL2/CS: S twice.

do you know what VAC is?

Yeah, you should really make sure there is no trace on your computer
Why test them out anyway? What would you have done if they'd have been any good?

I prefer to know that I win by skill and not teh aid of faaabulous codes.

you do understand not all is what it seems with valve/vac don't you renegatus?
like, that they're pretty much logging everyone who uses cheats and are gonna clusterfuck them later on.
mostly, i hope you didn't play on a public server.

I don't cheat, but I don't know what VAC is, anyone want to 'splain?

Valve Anti Cheat
it's basically an automagical system that bans players from steam for cheating and such, it's not properly in place for the source engine yet.
however, i'd not be surprised if at some point valves does like they have with the pirates "we've just banned 23,000 cheaters" or similar.

hmm. i hope they look at it sensibly. I never cheat in normal games, but i did use a "IcT.Hook.Alpha.1.0" thing once to see how these things work. havent used it since as it was pretty useless narf.
I'd like to think they look at people and if they cheat say more than 1% of the time they play warn them, and 5% ban them or something like that.

Hmmm, I guess there might be some slight leeway when considering that some gaming movie/machinima makers use things that could be considered cheats but... I personally wouldn't go near them even if people offered to pay me.

I think that banning people because of cheating before they implement VAC is a bad idea.

hehe, vac is in place for all HL1 mods, but not hl2, at the moment they're only logging haxors, but not actively banning. yet.

Well, if that happens let it. But I'm still a paying customer and there's nothing an angry letter and several complaints won't do. They're a company and can't afford to lose decent paying consumers.

Ummm where does steam state that its "logging" cheaters. If it could "log" them without VAC it would ban them surely? Thats like police saying oh he just speeded, I wont fine him Ill just write his name down and when I feel like it fine him maybe?

1) see also: the EULA
vowles, i seem to remember some stuff about it, not exactly sure where but there were lots of hints to it on the steampowered forums

hes right, you know...
Steam legal boffins wrote:Valve may terminate your Account or a particular Subscription for any conduct or activity that Valve believes is illegal, Cheating or otherwise negatively affects the enjoyment of Steam by other Subscribers. You acknowledge that Valve is not required to provide you notice before terminating your Subscriptions(s) and/or Account, but it may choose to do so.
Bit harsh really. They ought to do a "three strikes your out" type system.

i dunno, i think if you're caught with cheats, playing on a secure server, you should be banned from all online games, castrated, and sworn at a bit.

I would agree with you, but for one thing:
Idiot friends.
You let an idiot friend use your computer, the bugger installs a cheat, you get banned from Steam for life.
You kill idiot friend, get arrested and, after a short period of suprise sex in the prison showers, hang yourself with shoelaces.
This makes the other prison inmates angry, as their best piece of ass has been lost. They riot, take over the prison and launch a full scale rebellion against the country. One slightly silly ex-con gets his hand on the launch codes of hidden nuclear weapons.
World ends.

And yet Jooses tale could still easily be a reality, i know i couldn't go without any flavor of source for a year

I think logging people now and banning them now would class as entrapment I believe. Letting people think they are safe from being banned then banning them.
They entice people to try out the cheats by not putting in a anti-cheat program(which I dont think they should but some geeks have nothing better to do? Maybe us we should stop oppressing them when they enter the real world :D)then people try em thinking theres no chance of people caught then getting banned.
If they did log the cheaters then Iam sure it would just be used at more evidence when a cheater is caught with VAC.
Its the reason there signs about CCTV, Smart Water, Anti-vandal grease (bah I hate that). Also the signs deter people from commiting the offense.
