my mum just bought a macbook (OS X, in case you need to know), and she asked me to help her to get it online. but when i go into the AirPort menu, and he asks me to give the WEP-key, he won't accept it. after fiddling alot with it, i still haven't found what the problem or solution is. my experience with macs is also very limited so i'm very stuck indeed. i checked my linksys router options, but after trying different key options, the mac still won't recognize the key.
thank you in advance very much.

Defenestrate it, then try again.

I've got a Mac but not used wireless on it. Can't you use WPA instead, can be easier to setup? But that's probably not that helpful either.

i did try to use WPA as well (at least, i think it was), but alas, to no avail.

My wireless just worked, you turn it on in the Airport menu. And you have an icon on the top right bar at the top. And like, click on it. Select the network you want, if it needs a WEP key, type it in, and then it just worked.

well, that WEP key bit is what didn't work.

Did it bring up a type in box asking for the WEP key? And then ask if you want to put it in your keychain?

and it then went on to reject your WEP key.. hmm, so basically, there must be something wrong with the network set up, or the WEP key you typed in is wrong. There shouldn't be a compatibility issue between the Macbook's network and a Linksys router. Does the wireless network work with other computers?

Interesting, I don't use protection (pun, anybody?) on my wifi (as you can decode WEP quite easily), so I can't help, but Macs are generally quite nice when it comes to networking. Check all the settings for anything out of the ordinary.
