It just gets worse and worse, what are Sony thinking?

Ahhh after reading further this isn't another thing taken away, simply an explanation of what it is from Sony
"The original PS3 used the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesiser to emulate PS2 titles. With the latest European specification we have removed the Emotion Engine, retaining the graphics chip. This has an impact on the number of PS2 titles that will be backwards compatible."

I don't really see this as a big thing. It's nice to have backwards compatibility but I wonder how many people actually use it and for how long? Keep your old console around if it really matters to you.

Much as it pains me, I have to agree with Spoodie. I played The Chaos Engine yesterday. Mention of this will probably draw coos of nostalgia as it did from me, but I completed about half a level before I got bored of it. Sure, it's nice to be able to go back to old titles sometimes but they don't often age well and it's not really a dealbreaker. However, I can see how it's a slap in the face to Europeans that they have to pay more for less content and it'd really make me think about exercising my power as a consumer had I been considering buying one in the first place.

Not everyone has a PS2, or wants to leave it connected, or doesn't want to sell it or give it their cousin or something.
The PS2, for example played PS1 game with faster disk access times and smoothed edges on the graphics.
To begin with, there won't be many original titles to play, whereas backwards compatibility gives it an instant catalogue of lots of games - even I haven't got all of them.
The trouble with emulated compatibility is that you don't really know whether a title works all the way through. I know of some where it's fine until some way into the game. If the compatibility is "limited" - what is the limitation - what features are not emulated, and where is it documented which of the features each game uses?

I appreciate the theory but I'm not convinced by the practice. I'm mostly speaking from personal experience: I have a PS2 and almost never used it for playing PS1 games. I have a Wii and only but a Gamecube disc in it to see how what happened.

Well, 1 week ago I just had just used my 10% discount whilst pre-ordering the PS3 meaning It would knock off £42.50 price. I'd wanted one for ages and the sole reason I hadn't brought an EcksBawx 360 instead was because of all my PS1 and PS2 games I already owned (Although, I must admit i don't play them every single week, I do occasionally get my nostalgic freak on and complete MGS 1/2 or others again..). I was 99.9% sure I was going to buy one come March 23rd.
Now this has seriously changed all of that. It's 50/50 now on whether I'll buy one or not and it's
not even because it won't play a lot of old PS1/PS2 titles for a good couple of months - it's the cheek of having to pay more then anywhere else in the world, having to wait a longer time to get it and NOW getting less for the money I'm paying.
Also, like FatherJack mentioned, I only like to have one console set up, as I'm a lazy fuck.

I never had a GC, but I reckon I'll be investing in some to play on the Wii- I'm sure there's some classics in there somewhere once I've finished Wind Waker and Ocarina.

This

as soon as I can actually buy a Wii. Two months now with no stock, it's getting ridiculous. Still, Super Monkey Ball FTW!

If I were to buy a PS3, I wouldn't want to have to still use the PS2 as well, as that would just be stupid, and it takes up too much space in my TV Cabinet.
Also, an important point I haven't seen covered yet, will the Buzz Games & Eye Toy games work due to the peripherals connected to the USB ports on the PS2?

I never played PS1 games much on my PS2, but that was largely because I didn't actually get a PS1 until after the PS2 was out. (I was poor, then - well more precisely in spiralling debt). So I only came to PS2 gaming once there was a huge catalogue of PS2 games to catch up on.
The Wii, however - I've bought three GameCube games
since I've owned it, expressly to play on it, mostly as there's not enough
new stuff for it.
The 360 is a different animal, there are a few games I'd like to continue to play, but not that many, particularly as I can't take my save games with me - but the old model will either be modded/scrambled to be used as a media centre device or given to a mate to do same.
If I bought a PS3 on release, I'd still have half a dozen in-progress PS2 games I'd like to continue, while I'd slip the silver box and a selection of my crapper games to someone in need - my Dad has a mate who had all my unwanted PS1 games off me - and this was only Christmas before last! So I'd ditch the box, but keep my rarer games - unfortunately these now being the ones
least likely to work in the PS3.

A good point - the only reason I keep the GameCube is because it has a GameBoy Player attached - that level of compatibility,
hardware compatibility has never fully occured before.
