5punk Vs XCOM 2

Post by Dog Pants »

My troop pool has been liberally spattered with 5punk for my first playthrough of XCOM 2. I won't post any detail of the missions because spoilers, but I will track the progress of 5punkers here. So you can see when they (you) die.

Mission 1 complete.
The first mission after the tutorial, and I get one 5punker in my squad of four. Friz is a killing machine, taking out 4 of the 8 bad guys in the mission and getting promoted to Grenadier. One of my randoms is using a truck as cover when it explodes, so I end the mission with one death. It's not Friz though. On return to the Avenger I find Grimmie and JockGit in the barracks.

Mission 2:
A great success. There were complications this time, and we found that a focus on ambush tactics were counter-intuitive to timed missions. However Friz and Jock both got two kills each for promotions, with only Jock wounded as he dashed past an overwatching bad guy who was trying to protect his purple tricycle. I've started to screenshot people on Steam, if anyone fancies a look at themselves/others.

Mod edit: http://steamcommunity.com/id/dogpants/s ... =imagewall I think is your XCOM2 ones.

Cheers FJ!

Mission 3
The mission was technically a success, but it came at a cost. I completed my objective and evacuated, but with Grimmie KIA after dashing out of cover and getting taken out by a Sectoid on overwatch, and Friz captured after being unable to get to the chopper in time. Hopefully I can rescue him later, but in the meantime I need to recruit more 5punkers as only Jock, safe in his hospital bed this mission, remains.

I didn't even get a screenshot of Grimmie's lovely blue armour with orange smileys on.

Mission 4
A disastrous combat sweep. No timer as such, but it was terror-site-esque in that I had to rescue people. I failed at that and lost two of my four squad members thanks to some new gribblies. The only positive to take was that Aki survived to be promoted to a Specialist, albeit severely wounded.

Mission 5
My first catastrophic failure. A squad wipe, costing me the Support I'd had since the first mission and resulting in JockGit captured after my last rookie was killed while he was mind-controlled. I was extremely lucky to last as long as I did, with Jock and a rookie being chased all over the map and alternately mind-controlled and panicked. That was fucking hard, and I don't have enough troops left to fill another squad, and not enough resources to recruit any more.

And the brief said Easy.

Mission 6
A much needed victory. No timer on this mission so my squad was free to take precautions, and the terrain was slightly advantageous in that there were no long lines to make flanking difficult. New recruits Deject and Joose both survived unscathed to get their first promotion, to Grenadier and Sharpshooter respectively. The two randoms, including my last experienced soldier, survived with injuries.

Mission 7
Good news, a rescue mission! Judging by the lack of guards, it seems we found Friz hiding out in the city. Extraction was going well until a sectoid showed up. Final result; Friz successfully rescued, but at the cost of Deject and Dog Pants killed, and Aki and Joose captured. I fucking hate those sectoids.

Mission 8
Ugh. Another squad wipe. I tried a new tactic, sneaking to the objective before opening fire. It worked okay, and we took out a sectoid with no trouble, but it then meant we were taking on a lot of bad guys at once, including reinforcements. Fab got caught from behind by a dropship full of ADVENT troops and died from a shock mace to the anus. Buzz bravely retrieved the objective and survived to fall back to safety, only to find a new kind of even tougher bad guy there. He was backed into a corner and shot down. Friz returned to active service, only to succumb to snakeman poison as the remains of the squad abandoned Buzz's hard-fought cargo and fell back. Last man Em was hit by a lucky shot as she fought a retreat back to the extraction point. Another 'Easy' mission.

Mission 9
Another mission, another squad wipe. It went badly from the start, losing an experienced Ranger in the first firefight. After that Tezz got strangled to death by a snakeman, my other Ranger was outflanked and obliterated, and Roman was stunned and captured by a Lancer. I'm going to run out of 5punkers soon.

Mission 10
The stealth approach backfired this mission. Poor Sheriff was left out in the open when one of the randoms accidentally alerted the aliens. He was gunned down by a Muton without even taking a shot. Two more of the squad died while trying to reach the objective, and Wiggy had to pull back on his own. He made a valiant retreat, killing one of his pursuers and taking Sheriff's body with him at the evac. Having someone survive feels like a victory at this point.

Eventually, but first I'm going to leave you with the ADVENT so you can reduce their morale with puns.

Leave him for long enough and they'll give him back willingly.

Mission 11
Victory! Well, I've won a battle at least. I managed to scrape enough research and resources together to upgrade my weapons, and suddenly those sectoids aren't so tough any more. A 5punk-heavy squad (well, it's been a while) set out to investigate a UFO and returned without a casualty. Johnson was pretty badly injured by a grenade, but he earned his bed rest by rescuing the random from the clutches of a snakeperson - one of four kills. Pete managed to dodge the same grenade blast that injured Johnson and one-shot the elite who threw it. Bits 'naded two sectoids at the same time and drove them into overwatch fire in an ambush. Bits was promoted to Ranger, Pete and Johnson to Grenadier. Hooray!

Mission 12
Back to normal. An early ambush in a rescue mission (for a scientist, sorry Roman) could have gone better with most troops missing their targets and another nearby squad being alerted. Bits suffered the ignoble fate of being run through by a Muton's bayonet, then being raised as a zombie, then being killed again by Pete's grenade. Unfortunately Pete and a random weren't far behind, taken out by gunfire from more Mutons and soldiers. Wiggy again fought a brave retreat, paring the enemy down to a single injured trooper who vanished just as the evac took off. I imagine him running out, arms in the air like Sgt Elias in Platoon, as the dropship flew away.

Mission 13
I didn't make it past the first encounter before I was steamrolled. I reckon the whole squad (of randoms) was dead in 5 turns. I took a couple of sectoids down with me, but now I only have two men left, and one is still injured for two weeks. FJ, you might be taking the next mission solo.

Mission 14
Sorry FJ. It sounded like a good idea at the time. Get you in, get an ambush kill, then extract you again. I'd fail the mission but get you levelled up. Unfortunately even your Deagle was no match for a full squad of Mutons. You did some damage and blew some shit up, but went down in a hail of laser-fire as you ran for the evac on turn three.

I now have only Johnson left, trying to get out of his hospital bed to avenge his fallen comrades.
