Graphics Cards!

My slightly old (Nov 2012) but pandered with a lovely aftermarket cooler HD7950 has asploded for some unknown reason while reading a forum. Not even playing games! Handily still have my old HD4850 knocking about so I can at least use the PC.
R90 290 / 390 looking like a good replacement for future proofings? Or is it time to jump the AMD/ATI ship and go Nvidia?
Edit: Fuck it, as I had a copy of PCG October 2015 with it's GFX test, plumping for a Sapphire R9 390 Nitro. Shouldn't really spend the £270 on it, but it'll last me a good couple of years.
