Just a heads up really
dreamhost wrote:We were just informed one hour ago from our building management that an emergency maintenance window is scheduled for this Sunday morning, February 25th, at 12:01AM PST (GMT -8). This maintenance window involves taking our entire building’s power offline for approximately 3 hours.
Since only one of our three data centers is losing power, not all servers will be shut down. Unfortunately, our core routers and our upstream providers are in that data center, so there will be no network to any servers during the window.

Hmm. 5punk isnt the most reliable site as it is, but i guess these things happen from time to time.
However im not impressed with Dreamhosts network structure, having one datacenter take the rest down with it kinda defeats the point of having multiple datacenters... bad planning there i think.

While 5punk isn't super-reliable, it's very good, especially given the cost and how much load it's generally under.
and yeah, DH's network structure isn't perfect, it's a *LOT* better than most cheap hosts, not to mention that they're very open about stuff so you generally get a heads up on stuff like this.
Also, this is a really rare happening all told, given the power fuckup is in such a manner that they have to pull the power to everything (or risking death to their engineers) not to mention it's in the building where DH lives, so not really their fault.
Either way, just have a late night on saturday and sleep through the DT if it bothers you that much.

Thanks Berk, just noticed that and seen this post.
Just to confirm, it costs me $120 a year to host 5punk.
I have £25 in paypal at the moment, and it's not up until August, so hopefully I can raise enough through donations by then.
Personally I think their service isn't too bad considering how cheap they are.
DreamHost have had their troubles when we first hosted 5punk with them, but recently it's been quite good, and I appreciate how open and honest they are about issues as opposed to not knowing what the fucks happening with the last host 5punk was with.
They're not perfect, but for the money I am satisfied.
Also, worthy of note, if anyone signs up to dreamhost, please refer me, as this made a massive difference to me last year as I get money knocked off 5punks's hosting.

Power Outage Update
Posted 5 hours, 12 minutes ago (February 25th, 2007 at 2:56 am PST) by Justin
Power has been restored to the building and all servers are back up and running. There currently is an issue with a blade in one of the core routers and it is being replaced, so the servers are still unreachable until this issue is corrected. We are working to get service restored as soon as possible. Our apologies for the inconvenience.
- UPDATE 04:51 PST -
The supervisor in one of our core routers went kaput when the power went off. It was replaced shortly after the original posting. Further problems arose with corrupt configurations left over from the old supervisor. These have been restored and we have re-established connection to seven out of our eight uplinks. We are currently working on the eighth uplink and everything is coming back to normal operation now. We are close to being 100% and thank everyone for their patience. As always, check this space for updates.
There we go, fix one thing and two more break.
