Space Engineers

Post by Wiggy »

So this is a Steam Early Access game I just saw and picked up on a whim, just because I saw the video and it seemed so very silly. And it was only £12. Some thoughts below.

17:15 - Ok, just finished installing. So far, so good.

17:26 - There's a video tutorial, which seems very helpful. I've just read that it's purely creative mode for now, but multi-player will happen. It looks like this game is the bastard lovechild of Minecraft and KSP.

Here's the tutorial video for people who are interested.

17:42 - I think I have the hang of the basic controls now. Time to try and build something. Then it will be time to try and crash it.

More updates as I go.

Just spent about three hours trying to make a ship. You should have seen it, it was glorious.

Then the game crashed and corrupted my save file. Oh well.

Overall, this game looks good and has a lot of promise. I'd say it was well worth jumping in now for twelve quid, assuming the stability issues get fixed.

This kinda appeals to me, but it seems so simplistic right now watching that video. Apart from building a spaceship and flying it about, can you do anything or does anything happen?
I know its only £12, but still, i'd kinda expect more, at least in the pipeline for future updates. Frustrating that their website says they "won’t speak about planned features, our ideas, future dates, road map, etc."

/edit
just found this: http://www.spaceengineersgame.com/features.html
so apparently they do discuss some planned features at least.

Maybe will take a punt on it later

At the moment that's kind of it. If it expands minecraft style, adding dangers, complexity and survival mechanisms it could be excellent. I wouldn't hold your breath for that though.

What'd be awesome would be some kind of massive space game made by those chaps who did minecraft.

Chuck the galacticraft mod on to Minecraft. Not quite the same in scope I'm sure, but it's in constant development. Might scratch your space minecraft/0x10c itch?

I was mostly just mocking the massive hype surrounding the announcement of 0x10c, and it's remarkably swift shelving.

Just picked this up in a four pack. It's basically is minecrack in space but a bit prettier and a more defined manufacturing system, which is both a good and bad thing: less flexibility to be wildly creative but the end results tend to be more functional. The impression is that the devs see this as a PvP game at its core, which is unfortunate at the moment because PvP is flawed: it takes too long to build a ship relative to how quick they are to kill.

However, coop Survival is developing into an interesting in game mode. Limited minable resources forcing you to work together on build priorities. Resources are augmented by NPC trade and combat ships that you have to raid, capture and recycle for parts. At the moment they're too easy to kill but they've just added sentry guns (internal and external ones), which should liven things up a bit.

Altogether shaping up nicely, but would highly recommend not burning out on it until it's further along in development, or risk missing out on what will eventually be a great fun game.

I've been watching with interest since survival mode was announced but I'm holding on. Mainly because I just don't have the time for it at the moment.

I'd love a bit of multispaz with 5punkers of anyone's up for that?
