Sony Set to Market Blu-ray as Winner of Format War

With a movie sale ratio of almost 2:1 Blu-ray discs are being declared the victor over rival HD-DVD by Blu-ray supporter Sony. 'And yet while all agree that it was a strong month for Blu-ray, opinion is split on whether the surge in sales is an indicator of stronger user adaption of Blu-ray compared to HD DVD, or simply a reflection of the larger number of new Blu-ray titles that hit the market over the month -- 25 new Blu-ray titles were released in January, compared to just 11 titles on HD DVD for the same period.'"
Pfft. With such a massive pool of source data (a mere 36 titles taken over a a single, traditionally slow, month) surely they are Undisputed Champions.

Didn't the whole DVD-R/+R thing teach companies that format wars just fuck customers right off? We just want shit to work.
Hehe, I love it when people use statistics in such obviously flawed ways as this. Its just ridiculous. I want something that will work, and not cost me the earth either. Beyond that, who gives a fuck if its one type of HD disk or another.
Besides all that, I've just bought a 32" CRT TV, and I can't see myself buying a flat-panel HD TV for some years yet so theres not really any benefit.
Same here, DVD's are absolutely fine quality wise, and the whole HD thing is overpriced and too diverse at the moment to spend any massive amount of money on.
I'll stick to my non HD plasma with DVD's for the next 5 years and see how things develop.
As much as "the industry" would love the new HD discs to overtake DVD's and then sale them at a ridiculously high price point, I don't think this will happen this time, as the jump in quality/content from VCR to DVD is massive in comparison to DVD to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray.

Agreed. I couldn't give a monkey's about this little conflict because I'll be waiting too, but as far as consumers en masse go they won't pay more than they're paying now for movies. Videos used to cost about the same as DVDs do now, and remember that they actually took a few years to catch on - I bought one in about 99 and it was at least a year before the DVD section overtook the video section in size, and I don't think I was particularly quick on the DVD uptake.
I know how ridiculous Sony are being trying to claim being Champions of the format war, but I hope that there a lot of silly people out there who believe it and buy Sony.
I mean, the best thing for most of us, is if a clear winner comes out sooner rather than later; so that production companies release their content on to one format only (the winning one), so that more time is put into building one type of High def player.
And this is a bit more controversial, as I know how Sony have a knack for screwing things up at the moment; I hope that sony win the format war, because BluRay is a nicer set up than HD DVD. It has more capacity than HD DVD, so we should get less of these ridiculous "Double disk" things, and its not backed by effing microsoft.
Also, anyone hear about a rumour being slightly confirmed that MS are going to release a higher capacity, HDMI, Black Xbox360? Could be interesting, as this would put it on a par with PS3 technically.
