Spec me a new controller bitches!

As my joystick isn't recognised by F1 2011 I think it's time for me to invest in a controller of some kind that has analogue triggers (like the Xbox controllers). As I already have an Xbox can anyone recommend a wireless receiver for it that's not the official one. Otherwise if that's the only way to go would I be better off getting a wired one or something else altogether?

HALP!

I bought an xbox 360 one a while ago to play Batman and the overwhelming consensus was wired > wireless. Personally I prefer the PS3 controller if only for the far superior d-pad, but the xbox 360 one is still the best on the market for PC.

yup. Whilst it is possible to get a ps3 controller to function, you can't seem to get it to work properly and it's a massive pain in the arse to make it work in the first place. A wired 360 controller is the best option I think.

What's wrong with the official one? It's something called an 'Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver For Windows', but I never found one of those in an actual shop so just bought a wired XBox controller anyway. The receivers cost about the same as a new wired controller, so it's easier to go wired so the PC and XBox don't fall out over having to share.

The Xbox controller is as good as any other controller out there, works without extra drivers in Windows, has sensible button defaults in games and the button colours/names match the on-screen prompts in games that use it for navigation.

The only gripe is that some games, like Rage, when turning on/detecting the controller switch to showing A, B, X, Y-style prompts on the screen instead of the keyboard/mouse ones. Most games it doesn't matter, but in Rage and a few other GTA-like games I like to use the mouse for shootings and the controller for drivings.

I wasn't keen on the official one as it was only about £1 cheaper than a new wired controller. Thanks all! Looks like an official wired jobby will be winging it's way to me

As joypads go I love my Xbox wired controller. The cable is really long too, I have half of it wrapped up with a cable tie.

I got a wireless one with the receiver for my computer and it is pretty awesome. I used it for Dungeon Siege 3 and something else and it is probably the best gamepad I've ever used.

I was going to get a wired xbawks controller, but when I popped in to the shop they had a deal on for a wireless controller and the little receiver thing for the same price as a wired controller. So I got that instead.

Is it easy to turn on/off on the fly, like by popping out the battery pack? I've had it in a few games where if they detect a gamepad they default to only showing the button presses for in-game commands and menu navigation - usually disabling the controller in-game (if you can) fixes this, but on the few games like Rage where I use both interchangably it's pretty tiresome.

I suppose you could do that, I honestly have never tried that. It goes to sleep in about 5 minutes if you don't press anything.
