HELP!

All of a sudden my PS2 isn't woking, when i stick a game in it just stays on the screen with the browser option and whn i go into it the disc logo appeaars but i can't select it
It also makes an odd clicking noise on this screen

I REALLY need to fix it because i need the PS2 to do my psychology project (video game violence) and i can't really afford to go buy another one

I expect the reader has gone faulty, or needs to be cleaned.

Have you got one of those CD Cleaners where you put a cleaning solution on the brushes on the disc, and play it back a few times?
If not, go out and buy one they are only about £2.

Give this a go first, and failing that you may have to open it up, and either try cleaning it manually, or failing that if it's still fucked, you can order replacement drives/units from various sites on the web.

quick question....is it a MK1 (big black monolith), or MK2 sexy slimline version. PS1/PSX's sometimes had a problem with the laser lens dropping, and it was also prevalent on early PS2s, especially if they were chipped/modded.

percusive maintenance....

if its a MK1 monolith, turn it onto its 'top' and give it a slap on the base, make sure theres no crud in the vents. return to normal orientation, and try it.

if its a MK 2 slimline, turn it upside down, give it a firm slap on the base. insert dvd (leaving it upside down), close the lid, clean the vents, and pray it works.

if either of these methods work, i suggest heading to your nearest Game/Gamestation/Whatever, and trade it in, cos it wont work much longer.

If they dont work, i'd probably go for the whole new laser/turntable unit. they shouldnt run you more than £30, but you'll have to fit it yourself. alternatively, you could probablyt pick up a secondhand PS2 from the smallads, and it wouldnt cost much more.

the clicking suggests that the reader is having trouble reading the disc so it's resetting to its original position to try again.

I've seen it many times and every time the only way i've been able to fix it is to open up the ps2, get a cotton bud with a bit of rubbing alcohol or something similar on the tip then rub the lens of the reader. this should sort it out, for a while at very least.

Acquire:

1 pot of jam
1 spoon
1 screw driver for accessing the lense eye
1 right hand (yours own will do)

...the rest is up to you

i had this problem a few weeks ago with mine. just needed a good clean out. just uncrew the bottom and give it a good blow (hehe) and maybe give the lens a clean with a cotton bud like sandwich suggested
