Neverwinter Nights 2

Is quite good, as it turns out. Once I got over the 2006-ugly, I noticed a rather nice musical score and some relatively decent voice acting, with what looks like some reasonably original quests (albeit tagged onto a main plot nicked from Lord of the Rings). The beauty of using D&D3.5 is that you have a huge scope to customise your character. It's also pretty hard, since healing is not easy to come by. Just like in D&D.

Once I get the hang of the SP game I'll start looking into the editor.

I have to admit that I'm finding the controls a massive ball ache.

What put me off grabbing this in the steam sales was remembering how crap the camera and controls where compared to the original game, i vaguely remember there being some mods or possibly a patch that helped with this though.

Controls aren't actually bad from what I remember.

narf, I was more concerned with Archery being rubbish.

There's a thing to make the RMB act like the MMB, so is like the WoW camera: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=nw ... tail&id=25
Some virus scanners will flag it as a trojan saying it might be a keylogger. Because it is, obviously.

A safer option is this one: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=NW ... ail&id=179 but it alters a lot more than just the mouselook. Still flags as a trojan on a couple of online scanners.

Safer still would be to use Auto HotKey and write a script:

Code: Select all

#NoEnv

SendMode Input

SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir%
#InstallMouseHook
#InstallKeybdHook

#IfWinActive ahk_class D3D Window

$RButton::MButton
$MButton::RButton
XButton1::RButton
Switches MMB and RMB plus adds the 4th mouse button as the RMB's former function of accessing the quick menu.

I'll be playing this again too (if I can find the hack to remove the timer in the first expansion) so will probably expand this script with additional functionality if I get annoyed by stuff.

It's only the camera controls I'm finding to be a mild annoyance. For movement I just click-move, like Baldur's Gate and Planscape Torment. If the game was faster paced it would ruin it for me, but as it stands I can just pause it and get a nice angle. WoW controls would be nice for exploration mode, but I can live with it. A mod roundup might be a good idea though. I downloaded an improved UI one last night that I haven't had chance to try, it tidies it up and lets you drag bits around (the UI is written in XML, so is apparently dead easy to mod).

I remember why I never got beyond Chapter 2 in this game now. Boredom and frustration with quests that always had just one more caveat.

It's still a bit buggy. I deliberately avoided the bit near the start of Chapter One where there is a scripted event and a bad thing happens. The rest of the events still triggered and I could complete the mission, but the dialogue still carried on as if the bad thing had happened. Worse, there are now two broken character slots taken up on the right hand side of the screen. That'll teach me not to try and be clever.

Quick guide to adding your character's items:

Start the NWN2Toolset:

Image

- File, New, Module
- File, New, Area, Outside, Tiny

#1 - Area is selected, should display an empty map in the main window.
#2 - Select Paint Objects for placing objects.
#3 - Select Items for adding items.
#4 - Find the items you want to place. It's a bit crappy and doesn't have a scroll bar so you have to use the mousewheel, or you can use the search felcher.
Click to place a single item.
To edit items (ie: stacks of torches, etc) choose Select Objects (see #2)
#5 - Click objects to edit and view the propeties. Scroll down for Quantity.

- Save the module (should default to modules folder) and close the toolset.

- Run game, choose New Game, New Module and select your awesome module.
- Import or create your character.
- Pick up everything, but DON'T equip it.
- ESC, Export Character.
- Exit and start the campaign (or any module), at Import Character your newly exported character will be something like Thor Yngwe (1) (local).
- Win

The editor seems to be relatively easy to use. I'm going to take a shot at starting a campaign, just with a few intro adventures to begin with. Anyone interested? Could lead nowhere, could be great. I'd ideally run them as a server on a saturday night, sort of like an old school P&P gaming session.

Yeah, I think I could be persuaded to get involved.

Dunno what I'd do for a character mind, I'd have to install and go through the Char Creator for ideas.

I could be tempted. Not sure how easy it'll be to squeeze into my schedule at the moment, but I would like to try.

I'd be interested. There are some handy tools to help with generating maps, but you'd need to add the interactive stuff in there. I assume you're planning to use the DM client/TS to sort of narrate and push players along rather than spending hours writing in-game dialogue and scripting triggers.

Seems like the easiest and most fluid option, since I'd be there anyway. I'll need to experiment but I can't see how scripting would be better.

Billet Anson reporting for duty.

Sidenote: Pester me on X-fire to do some work on my half-written campaign this week/next week. I actually have time to do so, I just need the motivation of RP starved D&D players.

The Dwarf? Yes, very good character that, but to be expected as it's one of the few things Obsidian seem to be very good at.

Colour me interested (a shade of mauve I believe)
