Blowed up and podded. :(

2007.01.30 00:59
Victim: Kittysama
Destroyed: Iteron Mark IV
Involved parties:
Corp: Legio Immortalis
Name: Kallysto (laid the final blow)
Ship: Cerberus
Name: Maddman
Ship: Drake
Name: Malcomtempt
Ship: Hurricane

[ 2007.01.30 00:58:47 ] (None) Undocking from Ebolfer VI - Moon 2 - Krusual tribe Bureau to Ebolfer solar system. (0.3 sec)
[ 2007.01.30 00:58:58 ] (notify) Warping to Stargate (Frerstorn)
[ 2007.01.30 00:59:10 ] (notify) Maddman [LMRTL] has started trying to warp scramble you.
(lots of missles)
[ 2007.01.30 00:59:19 ] (notify) Ship is out of control

I don't really understand a couple of things:

1. Why did they bother? Their ships are worth in the hundreds of millions - don't the sentry guns kill them? Mine was worth about 800k with mods and was empty.

2. How could I have avoided this? They locked me almost as soon as I undocked, so I didn't have time to warp - a cloak wouldn't have helped as I wouldn't have time to get clear. The introduction of the 0m jumps to gates/stations had given me a bit of confidence to go trading again, but I guess the gankers will always find a way.

Sorry for posting this - I expect the rest you have probably been killed loads of times, it's just I don't really know where to go after this.

Despite playing for over a year - I don't actually play very much. While I've perhaps outgrown 0.5 space, it's clear that I can't survive more than 9 seconds anywhere lower. Alone at least.

I've always tried to just do everything by myself, which has had mixed results - I decided I would fly a Covert Ops ship, and achieved this alone, but it was rather a selfish goal. My characters cannot mine or build, and they're not particularly good at fighting. They both have Indy 5 in their race's ships, which was a nod to helping out the corp someday with hauling, and one has moderate trading skills.

I said to friz earlier than kittychan was ready to leave 5punkorp, and Dres has very kindly offered her a place in fw4ppers. I don't think she's able to survive in 0.0 and paying the bills while bumming around Empire once a week doesn't add up.

I know most of this is my own fault - I play other games too much, I never attend corp ops, I never bothered getting vent working - so I'm not moaning about the fees. While I might not have agreed, I can see the need for them - to give corp members something new to do. I'm the same, just in rather higher sec areas.

Hopefully I can find a way to assist fw4ppers perhaps a bit more than I did 5punkorp, and am glad to be a part of them - they are in no way a "second choice" option in my view, as most of their members are way more accomplished than I am.

I play Eve for a bit of fun and to relax, and it's these forums and the in-game channels that will see that continue wherever we all are.

/me bums

narf mate, if one of the most popular (and downright nasty) HACs, and 2 of arguably the best tech one battlecruisers in game decide that a tech one hauler needs to die, then there was basically sod all you could have done.

also, in 0.5 and below, theres no concord response, just sentryguns. which even a rupture can tank long enough to do mischeive with. it would appear that someone just ganked you on the off chance you had billions of isks worth of stuff on board, and were willing to destroy you to find out.

For revengae?
add them to your addressbook, learn what sort of kit they like to use (did the cerberus and drake use heavy missiles? heavy assaults? was the hurricane artillery/AC using? sheild/armour tanked?) figure out what their tactics are, and build your setup about countering it.

or just forget about them. sign on with fw4ppers (god knows 5punkorp seems to have knicked all their pilots recently), start running missions/tradeing stuffs/r+d, or spec up the old manufacturing skills and start building stuff.

remember 3 things:
1. Remember to have fun
2. Remember that you'll always have a place to ask for help
3. Remember you're a womble

/me may have been up for too long while typing this, but meh

Griefers :x I detest them. Low sec is considerably worse than 0.0 for just this reason, and that area of Metropolis is particularly notorious (which is why the trade profits are so high). Cowardly pirates in hugely overprices ships ganking defenceless haulers. About the only thing you can do is fit WCS, nanos and/or inertia stabs and shield extenders/passive hardeners in the mids. If you have T2 indies then a blockade runner is awesome for low sec trading although it can't carry very much. You might consider using a Deep Space Transport or Iteron 5 as far as Hek then changing to a Runner for the low sec runs. Also, if you can run both toons at once then use your covops dude to scout for you.

Building stuff is pretty good for an 'occasional' player. Bung up some large buy orders in various places for minerals at very cheap prices (mission systems and market hubs are good) and be patient. Eventually you'll have enough to build a battlecruiser and make a big profit. I believe Spearmint does something similar and had billions in assets now and is greatly assisting us buy providing free BPC's of shiny ships.

Aye, griefers suck the sweat off a dead donkeys nutsack, I would certainly go down the Transport ship route, although they can be slow, they are hard as nails. Also consider fitting some jammers to it so, if they do manage to scramble you, you might be able to kill off their targetting thus allowing you time to escape

Make sure you stay around the channels though if you mosey on over to fw4appers! :likesitall:

Fw4ppers has been having a bit of success filling a niche in the market in Tidacha for heavy missiles. There's a level 4 agent there, and the market has stayed sound for awhile! Talk to Honza Bishop about building them, and you could definitely help him by selling them. We also used to have quite the supply of slaves about, and I remember there was a good .5 market for them somewhere.

Also, something I have had nice luck with is the new escrow system. Since you can scan prices in distant markets, it's easy to see where some demand is. If you can also find a cheaper supply source, or do some building yourself, you can make money there as well.

Then there is the trick of buying stuff below it's mineral cost. Takes a bit of research to find out what the mins you get from it are worth, but we had a player awhile back that made millions off buying all the drones, melting them, and selling them back in the same station. Hell, Fw4ppers made 50mil selling trit once just by watching for a hot buy order.

So don't despair, it is possible, just ask about to see what's working. We don't keep too many trade secrets or anything. Plus you can work up to ratting at our POS. I paid for and built that POS off of the rats there, it just took time. But a Safespot with a couple of giant secure cans was all it took. I flew a cruiser there even! Just make sure you have two safespots to jump back and forth between, more is better. If somebody is trying hard to get you, they'll scan you out if you sit still.

/me earnestly hope this helps you have some fun!

Oh, and send me a message here when you apply to Fw4pp so I see it more quickly. I'll even set you up as a director so you can give me a hand with things.

First things first, sorry about the loss. When yuor not use to them, it hurts. Now, that said this might sound a tad critical, but it's not ment to be.

Things you did wrong:
1) You tried running in a slow ship. That never works. Ever. Best idea would have been to wait till they locked you (which means the 30 second invul/can't dock timer is up) and then spam the dock button and wait for them to clear local.
2) You apear to have gone into low sec without doing much in the way of intel gathering. As friz said, you've got a covert ops ship, use that to scout. Use the map to check for ships/pods destroyed in the last hour, if your really paranoid check everyone in local to see if there's any clear cut pirates.

That said, low sec is dangerous. parts of it are ok ish, others are a nightmare. Western metropolis is a nightmare. I use to go trading in there, and the number of haulers I lost that way was mind boggling. With warp to 0 now, in theory it got a little safer, but in practise the pirates just uped their logistical game employing AFs with sensor boosters as tacklers while using logistics modules on BSs to keep them alive.
0.0 by comparison is alot safer. It's not somewhere you can afk about in a hauler, but then you can make better isk via other methods. Last I knew, you were flying about reasonably happily in a cyclone. Did you upgrade to a tempest/maelstrom yet? Would you like to? Can you fit one effectivly? (T2 guns are not required to be effective, though they do help)

As for surving anywhere lower, Friz use to do a surpurb low-sec/0.0 survival course (Which I can vouch for having sat in on it once out of curiosity). Nice simple 30 mins and you could pretty easily learn off any one of us exactly what 0.0 life takes (and believe me, baring a few clear cut ideals it's really very easy).

Overall, just sounds like you had a bit of bad luck. Don't let it discourage you and if your feeling curious, come have a look at the big pond (0.0) 8) . I can pretty much guarantee that if you've not been there yet, you'll like what you see.

Um, can you kick kittychan out please - I paid the first weeks rent and said I wanted to go, it's embarrassing me to have corp mails with her name in asking for more money.

Sorry Kitty, I didn't want to kick you, being a long standing member of the corp and all. Figured you'd want to at least pull yourself out. Felt...bad in some way. Have fun in empire mate, and see you in Fw4ppers channel :)

np, just didn't know how to do it - maybe I had some roles or something stopped the option appearing.

By the way, thanks everyone for all the advice/encouragement above, it's been unconscionably rude of me not to say it before. I guess I was sulking a little bit.

I've just stayed away a while, popped on and trained a few skills and had a few things to think about. I won't be leaving the game, but as ever I love playing lots of other games, too.

Hulk, you were right in what you said. I got a bit clumsy and maybe a bit greedy going out there, and didn't check my route properly. Your tips on checking local probably saved my ass getting back out of there as I'd stopped to pick up some stuff I'd bought around there when some guys from the same corp appeared in local and seemed to just hang around without docking at the only station. I waited til they fucked off and all was well.

Friz, fitting the Warp Core Stabiliser equally saved me on the journey back. I'd previously thought only 0.0 people needed them, but I'd likely be dead no less than three more times without it. I was quite lucky all considered as I made more than my ship's worth in the run, was empty and upgraded to an Iteron V once I got home. Zomg it's big!

In the meantime, I had a chat about salvaging the other night and have the stuff to give that a bit of a go, plus a few of you mentioned building - which rather appeals, so I'm training up a few skills in that area too, as well as topping up the trade ones.
