seeing as i'm here (and have xbox streaming stuff going on)


it's actually surprisingly easy to set up evox/xbmc once you have a chipped xbox (also, surprisingly easy)

to get the actual streaming set up, you just have to edit xml (i think) files with the info for your shares (for the xbox to stream from, it's the easiest way really) via the ftp server on the xbox (once evox/xbmc is on there)

most of it's dead easy, and there's a reasonable amount of info flaoting about.

It works really well.
just sit infront of the lounge telly, and browse all your media using the xbox remote.
You need to:
mod an xbox
install XBMC
share media on a network
edit XBMC config files. (pretty easy)

since writing, some things have changed. The last couple of boxes i modded have been newer versions. Microsoft have made it a bit trickier to do, but its still fine.

Hmm this sounds intriguing!!, see I have all the required stuff bar a modded xbox, I assume this would all work with one of the newer no-solder chips (I'm like the fat-handed twat when it come to fiddly things!)

And are you are talking about streaming video from your PC via the xbox to your telly?, or playing video from the xbox hard drive (transferred via the network)?

yeah, the no solder chips seem to mostly work fine.

you can do it either way, you can drop stuff onto the HDD using the ftp server that's on there, or you can just stream from windows shares over a network.

the XBOX is just a player. you can copy video over to its harddrive over ftp if you want, but the easiest thing to do is just get it to stream. that way the xbox drive can be small, and the movies can stay in once place on your pc.

You need to find out what version of xbox you have. If you just bought it in the shop yesterday, its probably a v1.6, if youve had it for a while, it could be anything.

ive never used a soldee-less one, so i dunno how well they work. but if you read reviews/comments etc im sure you can find out what works where

once its modded, you need the software to go on it
Xbins is the place.
you need an IRC client like http://www.mirc.com
and an FTP client like cuteftp http://www.globalscape.com

join #xbins on efnet (Ithink)

then type /msg xbins !list
and stay logged into that conversation. it will tell you how to login over ftp to download the files hosted. (if you leave the IRC chat, your ftp login will ceace to work)
you want a bios, dashboard, MBMC. you can use mbmc as a dash when set up.

read lots of guides and stuff before attempting anything drastic. you loose all warrenties when you open your xbox, and xbox live wont work when the modchip is on (you may get banned), and if you play halo 2, maybe wont work even when off.

however there is an equivalent of xbox live for chipped xboxes

Cool, I may just have to give it a go :D (time and money permitting, neither of which I have)

note: seeing as this is now in the xbox live forum, it's worth noting you can't used a chipped xbox with xbox live

not sure, but last i heard it was pretty difficult to get away with

I've found out more about the non M$ equivalent of xbox live that A is free and B doenst mind chipped boxes. Have a read of this site:

XBConnect is another one, although it seems to be Xbox/PSP only.

What's the latest software around for loading onto a chipped Xbox?

I have a chipped XBox, (chips about 3 years old now) but I haven't loaded anything new onto it, as I still have the original menu, without any XBox Live Options etc...

There seems to be so many different dashboard things around, I haven't a clue which one I should load.

I haven't replaced the hard drive or anything yet, I just want to overwrite the dashboard with something a bit newer.

Don't want to store images on the hard drive or anything, so will I still need to replace the hard drive with a bigger one?

i'd say grab a copy of the newest slayer's evox installer cd you can find and work from there.

you don't need to replace the HDD unless you fill it (which isn't likely if you're just streaming to the xbox)

I'm currently downloading Slayer's EvoX Auto Installer 2.5, 2.6 & 2.7 Beta

I'm guessing the safer option is to go for the 2.6 one?
Do I just burn the ISO image, and then power the Xbox on with the disc already loaded?

Just purchased an Xecuter 3 CE and no-solder adapter, and pretty sure I know about the bios flashing etc now, so hopefully should be a simple task when it arrives!

Then I can connect it up to my wireless router :D (when that arrives...)

seems slightly pointless to me, but for some strange reason i wanna try it.
i know somebody who has a non-solder chip that just screws onto the xbox, you can turn those things off if your going to go into live. apparently works fine (although don't take that as gospel)

Nearly all modchips come with a switch unit that you can stick to the underside of your xbox, allowing you to turn off the modchip.
As far as everyone is aware, this is fine to play on xbox live.
Your xbox will load the orig MS dashboard, and you will have to have the original disc to play.

The worry is, that MS are getting smarter. Rumor has it that you can still be banned from Live because MS scan the xbox hard drive. If they find any other dashboard, or non standard stuff.....

But i dont think this is quite in place yet, and even if it is, it will only be the latest big MS games they will be watching, like Halo2.

Yep you can if you are using XBMC
On your computer, share the root of the CD drive. Then, just edit your XboxMediaCenter.xml or whatever you called it.
Find and modify, or add this bookmark to it:

<path>smb://USERNAME:PASSWORD@IPADDRESS/share name/</path>

Yes, if you want to connect an xbox directly to a wireless network, you need a wireless network bridge. They are similar to an access point, but not the same.

Yeah 2.6 is def the one that will work. I recon the beta will crash your xbox occasionally?
Once you have evox on there, i do reccomend adding XBMC as a dash. It does most that evox does, and is easier to use.
Dont forget that there is no limit of dashboards you can use. I have the orig MS one, Evox, and XBMC installed. Slayers EVOX is a nice start, as all essential proggies are included, but you can run these from xbmc once set up if you like.

Allows you to turn your xbox on and off using the remote. Once you have xbmc installed, with all your films on the network, and games on the xbox hdd, you dont need to get up to stick dvds in. Just sit back and poke the remote
