5punk Awards 2010

Votes are up (on the nomination threads) for the 5punk awards. Some are a bit thin in choices this year, others thriving as ever. I'm pleased to see some strong contenders this year who are relative newcomers to the nominations, evidence that while membership and activity might be on a slight decline, the people we do have are just as enthusiastic.
As an address to the site in general and on the first day of 2011 this seems as good a place as any. We've had some trials this year, individually and as a site, with births and deaths for many of us, and changes in individual circumstances meaning some movement of our traditional haunts. So in light of that I'd first like to thank Berk on behalf of everyone for holding up our servers, and paying for them, for as long as he did. Similarly, thanks goes out to Grimmie and Spoodie for stepping up to the plate and providing servers for TS and Minecraft respectively, as well as to all of you who provided temporary measures for both in the interim.
As the average age of 5punkers increases so do our real life commitments, and our inclusion here decreases accordingly. It's easy to become complacent and despondent about slow decline such as it is, but life occurs to us all and this passing year's theme of weighing in when needed has shown that the sense of community is as strong as it's ever been.
It's looking like there may be some decent games released this year, for example Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Diablo 3, Rage, and Brink. Hopefully at least a few of them will grab us en-masse in the manner of BACON. There are several MMOs looking good and on track too, in the form of Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2. With interest in World of Warcraft less than this time last year, will on of these fill the itch that some 5punkers have?
To all of you, from all of us, thanks 5punkers for being the massive bummers you are and I have no doubt will continue to be in 2011.

I think that, generally, 2010 has been a pretty poor year for games that 5punkers can play together over TS. Since the site started, I really think this has been the quietest year in terms of people talking rubbish whilst having fun in game. BACON started off well, but I think it flagged several months down the line due to lack of maps. I believe BLOPS is quite good, but after a string of disappointments (I'm looking at you, MoH) I feel somewhat jaded by the whole MMOFPS scene.
However...
I think it has been fantastic to see enthusiasm with which some of the beardy games have been picked up. There may not be many on the market that we can play but, as in the old days, the most fun is coming from making our own entertainment. I love the beardy games, and would like to thank all the GMs for all the work they've put in on them.

While 2010 was a relatively poor year for 5punky games, other than a few wild flings at OTTD and Minecrack, I've (rather sadly I think) been playing multiplayer extensively with non-5punkers. The '5punky multiplayer games' genre is actually relatively small, being limited to COD, WoW and one or two fleeting titles that rarely stick around and unfortunately these are no longer to my taste. This is no reflection on 5punk at all, which remains and always will be a bumhuggable community (unless you sound like chewbacca on teamspeak).
Eve notwithstanding (which I barely play anymore), I've been enjoying ArmA2 3 nights a week with the lolclan and we've recently got games of Pirate of the Burning Wee and Victoria 2 going. There's also a healthy following of flight sims and other 'heavier' titles.
I suppose my point is that on the surface things may seem quiet, but there's plenty of activity and scope for more around the place, even if it's not traditional 5punky stuff.

Pretty much this, I don't know if I played anything with you guys in the first half of 2010.

I've been mostly playing singleplayer games this year, after the Bacon flurry earlier in the year, I've been less interested in new FPS games - I think MW2 started the rot late last year and the spark inside of me that used to get me excited about the latest AAA title seems to have gone out.
However the games I have played with 5punkers, such as Minecraft, OTTD and the various zombie-shooting games have been hugely enjoyable, and even when playing singleplayer games 5punkers are never far from my thoughts.
We've tried some new things, like the role-playing campaigns, and dug up some old things. A lot of the 2011 releases I'm most interested in do seem aimed at the single player, but as 5punkers we always seem to find a way to if not play things together, at least talk about them together.

Coincidentally I was thinking a similar thing earlier today. It's not a new thing, but it just feels like the straw that broke the camel's back - that a AAA shooter is going to be aimed at console kiddies and as such be a shiney but brainless shooter full of cringeworthy machismo and horrible DRM. It's certainly the way I feel at the moment.

I've put all previous awards on the wiki
here. Quite an interesting read. I mean to elaborate on the categories when I have time.
The polls should be closed now. I'll announce the winners later today. Grimmie, could you PM me the links to the trophies please?

So beautiful Grimmie has had to host it elsewhere, as Imageshack removed it.
