Minecraft Project

Post by Dog Pants »

Do we fancy having a huge 5punky build project? It was mentioned last night and I like the idea (although it's been discussed before to naught). Individually we're capable of some impressive structures, but as a group all chipping in to a common project we could make something awe inspiring. As long as it's something somewhat open to interpretation so it couldn't get spoilt by differences in interpretation, people could come and chip in as and when they could be arsed.

From previous experiences I've found that tall things pose a problem because of the map ceiling, so something expansive and/or deep could be good. Lord of the Rings stuff is suitably epic (my latest project is Minas Tirith), but anyone interested suggest away!

Isengard could be good. Some flaming trees in the massive circular courtyard, a black tower that isn't too tall, and then a humongous open mining pit with lava floes and stone walkways criss-crossing through it as deep as it goes.

Also, I found this on 4chan's Traditional Games board while looking for fancy campaign settings.

That actually looks fairly do-able. and I don't know if it would work, but we could make a spiral staircase along the edge of the giant pit were we could add some tracks and a minecart later on.

Isengard sounds like a good idea to me.

I'd love to say yes, awesome idea.

but without respawning tools and explosives, it's gonna be nigh impossible.

The island one is a bit too ambitious I think, that hole would just take too much mind-numbing labour to make. Isengard is more interesting.

Well what ever we are going to do, I think it would be a good idea to start stock piling iron and diamonds for tools.

Isengard it is then. I still want a minecart ride somewhere though.

Would it be a good idea to at least plan how big the circle is going to be, map it out with torches first.
And then maybe plan the size of the footprint of Orthanc (the tower) too?

This bit seems to be the most striking part of the tower.

Four buttresses going out in a cross, with a diagonal staircase leading to the entrance.

And then the balcony that Christopher Lee spends his days.

Is that tower not going to be too high to fit on the map?

We could make it as high as allows. It needs only be an interpretation of Isengard and with various people working on it I suspect that's all it can be. Starting from sea level would be a good start. And like Grimmie said, finding a good spot and marking it out would be the first thing to do. Also listing jobs that need doing on this thread could keep people busy and reasonably organised and motivated.

a lord of the rings structure is pretty boring anyway. can't we just design our own blocky architectural masterpiece?

Good idea, not sure where to start though. Scunner and his friend have shown some excellent tower-building capabilities, and Pnut seems to have a penchant for high walls.

Problem is unless someone wants do design something we're just all going to end up making some freakish structure of cocks and lava. Which is fine, but it's all we ever do.

Post a picture of what we're building
Post a shopping list (stone mainly I suspect)
Get building

I suspect that once the foundations are down and someone starts it off it should be pretty clear how the geometry will lie, and as long as everyone is working towards the same image it doesn't need to be block-perfect. The good thing about Isengard is if people get bored of the tower and fancy some freestyle mole-personism or lava sculpture they can start digging holes and tunnels around it. Oh, and we'd need a big waterfall/dam, and people love building those.

I have this in my noggin.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... ncraft.png">

As far as I can tell, it's only the circles of the wall and the pit that need measuring with torches, and then a bit of the tower footprint.

All the roads, trees, caves, walkways, sticky-out platforms and such are free form.

If we try and make the wall a certain thickness around (We could do square instead of circular, keeping it in the minecraft spirit?) we could even have rooms inside to do certain things like collecting and storing stone. In the books the wall sections were used as store-houses.

In hindsight, cubey version is probably more fun and easier to do.
