internet connection problems

Right, so my missus has some connectivity issues with her laptop, and I'm supposed to solve it. naturally.

The problem is that it simply won't find any wireless networks or even bothers to search for them properly, I'm a bit at a loss as I've checked whether the receiver is on or not (which it was) and clicked many buttons IT-style, to no avail...
She's using a dell inspiron laptop with Fista and built-in receiver, if that's any help.

Check and see if Windows Zero Config service and the other network related services are running.

Okay, I fixed it, and it was the stupidest thing ever.
Not being all too familiar with modern laptops, I didn't know there was a button to turn off your wifi ON YOUR KEYBOARD. Neither did my missus.
So I've been spending these past few months looking for all kinds of software related problems that could've been solved by pressing a button.
I feel stupid.
