Steam treasure hunt videos

Well having looked through the trailers as required by the steam treasure hunt I thought I might as well give some thoughts on them -
Brink - looks like it'll be excellent fun, not too sure on the colour schemes yet though.
Deus ex - still spaffing at it. Can't wait, looks like there's plenty of options on how to complete objectives and do fighting etc.
Homefront - not sure what's going on but it looks like it might be a pretty good shooter or just a.n other shooter from the trailer. Bit mixed.
Portal 2 co-op - gonna be fun, simples. Possibly I'll be 30 by the time it actually turns up given valve time.
Red Faction Armageddon - apparently it's Mars with weird creatures, so it's nothing like doom. looks like crap in the trailer and I've never really got into the red faction IP anyway.
Space marine - way to shit on everything 40k, even down to the fact that the model somehow holstered the bolter in special invisible pocket and sheathed the chainsword in the power pack on the back this annoyed me as a poorly made and generic waste of a 40k tie-in. Even if it wasn't 40k it looks shallow and generic. I do hope not.

I'm really hoping Space marine isn't shite... been a long time hoping for a game where you can play as an Ultra Marine... looks 3rd person but I hope not

Prepare to be disappointed.

It's not slated for release until Summer 2011 though. Which makes the video a bit odd, because it looks shite but complete-ish.
So it's either being held back for some silly reason when it's nearly ready to ship now, or it's a fail video of alpha/early beta footage.

Everything I've seen about Space Marine makes me think it's going to be bad. From the console conversion (in an old school bad way, not the Bioware way) feel, to the lazy "Space marines don't use cover" excuse for not having a cover system. So unimpressed am I that even rave reviews at this point would fail to sway me to buy it.

I generally hate cover systems. Just give me a lean function and let me worry about being behind a barricade. I don't really care for being sucked up against walls and then having to fight the game when I want to move away.

Cover systems can be done well...but I've only come across one yet that's not cumbersome to use. The one in question was at a SEGA arcade (in Bournemouth) which had a set of IR sensors around you. Basically it was MS's Kinnect about 10 years ago, except you held a light gun as well and your body movements were translated to screen.
Which really is the issue with cover systems. As a user you've only got limited control over your characters actions (ie, you can't often just raise one arm up) so cover systems are always going to be a compromise when using normal control systems.
I'm also not an eejit, so I'm quite capable of holding crouch behind a box.

I quite liked ME2's cover system. Just sayin'.

Cover systems always feel to me like something developed for a machine that doesn't have enough controls to enable crouch/lean/shoot at the same time so the game has to do part of it for you.

It just feels more dramatic to me - being able to see over a barrier clearly in third-person while you take advantage of cover.
Walking face-first into a barrier and crouch-walking across it doesn't seem so superhero to me.

Games like graw or me feel good with their cover systems in that you know that standing in the open blazing away will get you killed very quickly, it adds a tension to the survival aspect and I get sucked in more by it.
In games like gow its just bloody annoying when you try and chain axe the face of some gribbly and instead slide face first into a chunk of rock next to your target.

Brink looks very French. The video on the Steam hunt is an old cinematic trailer. The gameplay videos are much more interesting and revealing. I'm looking forward to see how and if it works.
I'm surprised there's not been more comments about Deus Ex on the forum, I thought people loved it.
Homefront interests me because it's from the developers of
Frontlines: Fuel of War, which I really enjoyed for a while. It had more than the usual variety of tools and abilities for an FPS. Most of which have been copied by other games since, drones and RC cars being two I recall.
Oh, yet another Red Faction game and this time it's as generic as you can possibly get.

Noone's mentioning Deux Ex in case they jinx it and it turns out shit.

I mentioned it and now it's been delayed.

I agree, it's more the lame excuse than the lack of the system that bothers me. As Grimmie said, ME2 wasn't bad but even in that game I'd still choose my own cover, FPS style, given the choice.

Dodging between pillars, popping out to fire a few rounds , then dodging back in to reload seems to me far more heroic than pressing the correct button to stand in the Special Place.
I don't mind games with cover systems, but the massive difference between games in the way they are implemented and how much cover they afford just irritates more than anything else.
I suppose once you're playing one exclusively you get used to its definition/level of realism, but if you change between games a lot like I do you have a lot more relearning to do than when you switch FPSes.
That said, I don't think I've ever used lean functions, seldom crouch and never go prone. Too many buttons.

I think that's partially true.
For me though it's:
1) I'm trying to have a Deux Ex blackout and not read anything barring release dates so I stumble into it as fresh as a daisy.
2) I'm not quite sure what to make of a game that's meant to be a prequel but will actually be more technologically advanced and varied in-game than its predecessors due to software and hardware improvements outside of the game.
It's also got a fucking massive legacy to live up due to DX 1 which to be honest, hasn't been surpassed as a whole yet.
