If the mods that appeared for BF2 are anything to go by it usually takes at least 6 months before anything decent appears. I've seen nothing worth bothering with so far, just a lot of announcements of mods being developed.
The mods shouldn't fuck things up as all the data should go in a new sub-folder in the "mods" directory but you could always take a backup of the whole game directory just in case. Worst case scenario you'd have to reinstall the game so it's not a particularly big deal anyway.

and if all the mods that were announced actually got released...
Wasn't PoE about the only good one that ever came out for BF2? We only played that very briefly before everyone went back to ranked servers.
Maybe we should announce 5punk mods for stuff all over the place. Seems you don't actually need to produce any content beyond a few design ideas, but it gets people talking about you on all the message boards - instant publicity!

I had some fun with
Nations at War mod, not as polished as PoE2 but had some very nice features and maps.
In fact some of the ideas are used in BF2142, like personal anti-air rockets (fun to shot at ground targets because of the massive splash damage, don't get too close) and classes with a better range of tools. The BF2 classes feel a bit restrictive now, with their small range of options.
