Windows Fista

So then, who is going to make the move when it's released?
When/is it released?
How much is it?
What benefits other than the media centre functionality does it have over XP Pro?
How likely is it that old AGP based motherboards and hardware will run on it?
I haven't really got a clue about Fista, as I haven't kept a close eye on it, but I'd love to know what you think of it to help me decide if it's worth approaching yet or not

1. NO! Try and get to know it: Yes, use it as my main machine... ooooh no
2. End of Jan iir (to none OEM's i.e. teh peoples)
3. Having had a small play around with it, it has far more annoying features than XP that are more tricksy to switch off (but this may be because I've been playing with XP so long that I know how to hack it to stop it annoying me so the same may happen for me with Fista)
4. I would imagine it will do, but hey, this is Microsoft after all!
5. ...
6. PROFIT

I may get another hard drive and run it as another OS so I can swwitch back and forth between XP and Fista. but the licence key is rather expensive for a poor student such as myself.

I'll do what I've done with every version of Windows since 95 - hang on to the one I've got as long as possible until forced to upgrade, then make it look and act like the old one.

Does your Uni not have an MS site licence? If so you are probably entitled to a copy

Most modern graphics cards are Fista compatible, not sure of exact specs but at least DX9 I think,
Although for me the only advantage of Fista for the short term will be DX10 which you will need a new card for (no AGP DX10 cards on the horizon as far as I know)

It seems to me that Fista just has loads more pointless features that i'd turn off anyway. The only real reason I can see to upgrade is direct x 10 but the fact the windows classic skin doesnt look very good on Fista is putting me off more than anything. Oh, and I'd probably need 2gb of ram which is a pretty expensive upgrade.

As far as I know, Amazon are doing pre-orders for the 'Professional' equivalent version for two hundred and ten of your English Pounds.

I refuse to upgrade until A) a good DirectX 10 only game is released and B) I can upgrade to a DirectX 10 videocard.

Gears of War most likely won't come out for PC for at least another year, if it ever does.

Doesn't stop me being hopeful
Anyway, we were ment to have had the DX10 eve version by now, so it'll likely be a good long while before we actually do.

Just to fill you guys in,
i have been experimenting with Fista for a while, and recently got the RTM version. (if you want a go, gimme a shout)
It seems quite nice, but fiddly compared to xp, and I wouldnt use it on my machine just yet.
However, its media center is much improved, and in testing works much better with our NTL setup in the lounge.
Therefore i've just pre-ordered a copy of ultimate edition Fista to go onto the new media center machine im also building for it.
The only annoying thing is that its media extender system is different, so i cant use my old xbox media center extender. Will have to buy a 360 or a standalone thing that isnt out yet.

I'm not going to *pay* for it, but I've heard I can get a free copy when I get to university, so I may bootcamp my mac to slide that on there.. but then again, I'll need more RAM. *Sigh*.
Plus, prices:

Basically, anywhere between £100 and £250. Depending how much awesomeness* you want.
*Awesomeness is relative, in this case the size of awesomeness will be very small compared to normal awesome things.

i paid £135 for ultimate. It must be OEM at that price. Its due to be shipped on the 28th apparently, so it should actually be received on the 30th, or thats the plan anyway.
I don't mind paying for it this once. I cant work out why. Maybe i just feel sorry for Microsoft as ever since ive been using computers, their software was always clumsily kept on the floor.

Will Fista work with BootCamp? There was a lot of oohing and aahing about it a while back but I've not heard anything since.
