Monitor distortions

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Monitor distortions

Post by Lateralus »

I have a nice new (second-hand) Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 93SB which I got for £30. Yay for 19" and 1600x1200. However, it has started getting these horizontal lines flickering across it sometimes and the picture distorts a bit. No idea what's causing it, as it doesn't seem to be linked to vibrations or interference from other electrical things and all the connections appear to be secure. It starts and stops at random, but can carry on for quite a while. Any ideas my hardware bitches?

first thing i'd check is if its still under warranty. I got a brand new screen for free from LG a while back.
But as for the lines, are they really really fine? Some CRTs have small wires running horizontally.
As for flickering, is it a mobile phone nearby? They used to make mine go a little bit mental.
Rack up another plus for TFTs...

My Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 91 has these. They don't distort the picture though.
Tried degaussing and all that?
Mine has some funky options in the third option of its menu... is there a factory reset you can do or owt?
Does anything change if you wiggle the cable?

Hopefully changing the screen refresh rate will fix this, otherwise it can be a sign your monitor is on it's last legs (if ti had any that is)

Have you tried wiping all the sticky residue off the screen? That's what I always do when I'm struggling to see what's on there.

Not speakers as it happens when they're not on. Cables are in fine. Refresh rate was 60, now changed to 70 and it isn't doing it now, but I'll wait to see before passing verdict on that being the solution.

In terms of warranty, I don't think it'll still be covered because I believe it to be 3 years old. It definitely isn't mobile interference, although the effect is fairly similar, only less regular.

Never heard of degaussing before, but it has now been done. Tried that before changing the refresh rate and it was still doing it, so it wasn't that.

I'll leave it at the new refresh rate for a while and see if it carries on. Thanks for the suggestions all.

Mr Pants - I would wipe off the residue but I'm trying to build it up in layers until I have enough 19" slabs to pave my yard with.

The speakers don't necessarily need to be on for them to affect the monitor. If the cables have crappy electrical shielding they can play hell with monitors. Also check any electrical applicances on the other side of the wall where your monitor is as they can do this too

Pfffft. QFT - I've encountered this at work, was very funny at the time.

You probably had to be there though.
